starting work - childcare help please

Ok, i have an interview on friday morning (yippy!!)

Anyway without beating around the bush, i'm a single parent with 3 kids age 13,10 and almost 8, i can claim help with childcare costs with my tax credits but have to be with a registered minder, however, looking online and using links my adviser has given me i can only find these that specify kids 0-8 years, does this means they don't care for kids older than this?

Any help appreciated, esp from those in a similar situation

    thank you

Childminders are only OFTED approved for 0-8 yrs old usually but this does not mean that they don't do older kids contact your local childrens information service they can be a great source of advice.

    thank you

i will do some calling around tomorrow, but i meant will they qualify for me to claim the help towards paying them?

As long as they are still registered you can usually claim towards the cost. look into busy bee vouchers too.

    Congrats Lou

Around here I think something is done in conjunction with the school. I know a friend of ours used to use something for her older children, I'll see if I can find out more.
Pretty sure though the school would have leads for you.
I know it was extremely expensive for her !!

Send them down the workhouse for a few hours, earn some money for their keep ! !

This explains the voucher thing a bit, you can ask whether your employer is part of the scheme, good luck Friday!!!

Lou on a different subject (and I might have this completely wrong) are you doing some sort of degree or something in consumer studies or the like ?

If so I have some reference books to do with kids and marketing that might come in handy.
I did put them up on the board but no one was interested.

    Let me know

ps they're free, just postage required !!

Childrens information and surestart will be able to give you information on childminders in your area with your specific vacancies, As a registered childminder i have to update them on my vacancies on a monthly basis.

    Hope this helps

thank you - so if you are registered can you confirm that you can look after older children, not just under 8's?

    (had a very testing day)

    thank you :-D

Someone has already mentioned Busybees but if its a large employer or a public body they may provide other arrangements for childcare costs, so make sure you ask.

    Good luck with the job!

Good luck with the interview

No worries in fact I am very embarassed , just checked back on the thread and seen that kelly wanted them.
    I completely missed her post.
    Seriously red faced here :oops::oops::oops:

Yes, ofsted regulate the under 8's but most childminders will look after over age 8 as well, the only difference is when ofsted do their inspection they do not look at the paperwork concerning over age 8.

    Good luck with the interview.

Good advice on where to look but also remember that your kids probably know other kids at school who are with a childminder and they may be aware of vacancies. You will also find out if they are any good from a childs point of view.

    Lots of luck loulou! xx

Don't forget.....when they ask you a question.....ask them the same question back (but with a little more confidence) and you'll have them eating out of your hand in no time!

Our kids are 8 & 9 (nearly 10) and both go to after school club (held in the school!) between 3:15pm and 6:00pm - 2 days a week.

They are obviously registered child minders as the OH gets some help with childcare costs.
