My friends lisa and Chris sadly lost their baby boy James in July and Lisa's Uncle Kevin kindly volunteered to make James headstone. Lisa and Chris was informed this was ok as long as she stuck to the guidelines in which she has. The headstone went up and gave Lisa, Chris and James brothers and sister some comfort. The amazing work of her uncle Kevin had a massive response on social media on how beautiful it was. Yesterday 31/10/2016 Lisa and Chris received some news that caused more unnecessary upset and was told the head stone needed to be removed by Friday (so 72 hours from today) please help us by signing the Petition to stop them removing it. As you can see there is no risk to public safety her Uncle has made sure this is secure. X

It would be interesting to know on what grounds the removal has been ordered.

That looks like a lawn cemetry, each cemetry has its own regulation on headstone dimensions , footings and the amount of lawn that could be used beyond the footings. These regulations took centuries to mature to what they are today.

looks like it's been placed onto a paving flag instead of being set into concrete so as they state not safe. in other words not done to their standards

It would, Mikey, but there's no doubt someone could maybe have dealt with this in a more considerate manner, I mean 'Got 72 hours to move it' - flippin heck. oO

PLEASE HELP!!
As some of you may know. I recently built a memorial headstone for James Leonard maddick. A child born to Lisa Bray & Chris Maddick . Sadly baby James died after living only a few short hours. His parents were obviously devastated.
Trying to help ease their pain, I volunteered to build and fit a memorial at James' gravesite.
Last Friday I fitted the memorial and James' parents were overjoyed. Many of you remarked at how fitting and respectful the finished memorial is, and for that I thank you from the bottom of my heart.
Sadly though today we were informed by Margam cemetery that it HAS TO BE REMOVED BY FRIDAY!!!
Whilst I am not a registered stonemason or memorial specialist. I can (hand on heart) assure you that in NO way could it ever be deemed as a hazard to public. It is constructed to last and securely fixed to a concrete slab that Margam cemetery laid themselves.
If you could find it in your hearts to support our fight against it being removed.
Please leave your name as a comment which we could possibly use as a petition to fight this decision.
Many thanks in advance for helping an already hurting family to not suffer anymore unnecessary pain.

Please share with everyone.

"A Neath Port Talbot council spokesperson said: "We understand that the death of a loved one, particularly a child, is an extremely emotional and stressful time and we extend our deepest sympathies to the parents and family of James Maddick.
"We have not given any such deadline to remove the memorial as we understand this is a sensitive issue and typically, on the occasion that such circumstances arise, our cemeteries staff will provide close support to resolve the issue and to respect the privacy and feelings of grieving parties."

I think the petition as it stands cannot succeed. Is there any way the cemetery can recommend an approved stonemason that would be able utilise the headstone?

I doubt any Borough Council would issue 72 hour ultimatum, not until months dragged on with discussions, in my area it would take at least a year if not two for any removal or rectification. It is simply not something that enforcement is instant like 72 hours. Trust me, even a parking fine (PCN) takes 28 days.

Much more than that, go to your local Borough Council and get a copy of "Rules and Regulations Relating to XXX Cemetries) and you will why.

Correct, there are the usual stonemasons who do the local business, each one of them will know how to mod this headstone to comply with the local "Rules and Regulations".

It's pretty basic English.

Signed,

You don't have carte blanche to ignore rules and regulations just because somebody died otherwise people would get away with all kinds of crap.
But some people love to write a sensationalist story to wind up the knee jerk brigade which has clearly succeeded here.
If you must point a finger look at whomever designed that thing.

Would love you to elabourate on what kind of crap they got away with.
It's not offensive and I fail to see how it represents any more H&S riskthan any other headstone.
Nice to see your compassion as the 2 animals obviously offend you.

I didn’t call the headstone crap but suggested that people would ‘pull all kinds of crap’ if given the leeway due to a death.
It’s totally irrelevant what I think about how the headstone looks and as for why it is in breach of regulations and if it is reasonable for the council to complain I don’t know so have no opinion.
That’s something for the council, the stonemason and the family to talk over.

Well maybe you should be more careful with how you infer things, especially when you don't know how it breaches legislation but can "point a finger at whomever designed that thing".
Classy.

You are actually making the inference based on what you thought I implied.
I do think the base looks pretty shoddy and it is also out of spec so I’ll happily call it a thing; the animals look cute though and a refreshing change.
If the stonemason had done their job properly there never would have been a problem so let’s address the actual problem rather than blaming the council.

Well as always with stories such as these, it's more about setting precedents than the one situation/circumstance.

I'm sure council would want to make a exception in this case but once you start making exceptions, then it opens the floodgates to all manner of requests.

the concrete slab? - see above

"It is constructed to last and securely fixed to a concrete slab that Margam cemetery laid themselves"

Yeah, the council supplied and erected tripping hazard that is visible on other graves within the cemetery (if someone took the time to look) is the only seemingly objectionable think I can see.

That's plentiful here in MISC with inference and insinuation, including the threads which are deleted by moderators.

According to the local press, the person who made it isn't a stonemason. He's a car mechanic and used his professional skills in making it. Which probably means it's made from sheet metal or equivalent. He claims it weighs only 5kg. And it's secured to the base with glue. Perhaps the council have a point.

jeez i never even considered it wasn't actually a stone, just thought hed done a good job not being a pro
can see their point then

I'm sure that a compromise can be reached. Shame it had to be splashed all over the internet and press.

Great article by Wales Online. Pictures of a dead baby and the bombshell news that daughter Lexi was born with 'clubfoot' (sic).

Can't they just drill into the slab and put some bolts through the base? Or is it a case of regulations?

In the building trade it's infuriating when most people comply and a few don't.....mainly to offer a cheaper price to undercut you.
