Streaming .MKV files to Xbox 360?

Is there a simple answer?
I've searched on here for threads and can't find anything useful.
If someone could help me or point me to a thread that would be great.
Thanks

Thanks!

whats the best way to network the xbox, wireless or wired?

If tversity struggles at all to play, then before using tversity convert the file to mp4 using XenonMKV. This will just change the container type from mkv to mp4 (no loss of quality) which the xbox can then read direct (or still use tversity, which I prefer). Used it for the last few years without any issues.

wired.

If the MKV is 'HD', I wouldn't even bother trying to stream over wireless G, it will be jerky to the point where it's unwatchable. Wireless N or an ethernet connection (or homeplugs) is a must for HD streaming.

I use Windows Media Center to stream everything, and all you need then to play .mkv files is install something from DivX. I'll have to go hunting for it and will post the link back here, but I stream all my HD stuff without any on-the-fly encoding malarkey. You really don't need TVersity unless you are streaming from the dash.

Ah, needs to be Windows 7. I didn't realise that. Alas, if you use Windows 7 and Windows Media Center, then you're sorted:

Buy a ps3

Why does that help? It still can't natively play .mkv files, you have to use that PS3 Media Server which does the exact same thing as TVersity!

(Note: if there's a way it can play .mkv natively, do tell.)

Also tversity didn't work it said this file is not supported on the 360.

Well that's what I thought, but didn't want to go down the usual route of insisting I'm right and then getting proven wrong lol...

But yeah, install that DivX thing and you'll be good to go. As it happens, I've not even tried to play anything from the dashboard so it may even turn out that it works without Windows Media Center.

EDIT: Just checked, no joy sadly.

I just run mkv files through MKV2VOB which takes about 30 seconds on a 2 hour film. Then the PS3 can play the file.

I know I will have better luck with the PS3 but the room I want to watch it in doesn't have a PS3.
