I've been seeing a few of them but in black, mostly over towards the Union Canal in the West of Edinburgh. No idea what they could be.

Not all of them.
Your post was going well until the "summer" part, it appears we no longer have one in Scotland

Just googled it - looks very similar, but not quite it as the wing shape seems very different, and the legs seem a lot fatter in my pic. Evidently from the same genus though!

Apologies for the low quality picture. This thing was crawling on our kitchen window, it was quite slow and didn't seem interest in flying away.
Andrew18, it looks like an Ichneumon Wasp, difficult to say which species from the photo though.
bjm your like grissom from csi ..... quick , quick ..... smell my fart and tell me what i had for dinner ...........i may be making jokes , but i am kind of impressed
Haha, thanks for the kind offer, but I may decline!
It's a spider wasp. I keep tarantula and there is a tarantula hawk wasp which is identical although ours is a lot smaller, They paralyse the spider and lay an egg inside then the larvae eats the spider alive, they can sting and bite and you don't want either lol hope this helped
