    Surround sound alternative

    Hi all,
I've been after an AV receiver for some time now, buget is around £350 for a half decent AV and 5.1 speakers.

However, I was thinking, could I have the same performance from a different setup? For example, what about if I built some sort of media PC? Can I get an HDMI 5.1/7.1 sound setup or am I just being ridiculous and should just keep with the AV idea?

    Thanks

You could build a media PC with HDMI and surround output but you would still need an amp since the PC will not have a high power speaker output.

So my recommendation would be go with your first thought and spend it all on a good amp and speakers.

There are lots of good all in one systems available in your budget from the big names like Sony, Samsung, Panasonic.

Cheers pal, that rules the PC idea out.

Not really after an AIO system as dont need the DVD player part.

The STRDH800 has been reduced to £220 at richer sounds and some Yamaha speakers to £120 so may have to go with that. Would have loved to have got the Denon 2309 if I had been luckys with Currys!

I would seriously consider the Onkyo (perhaps a 307) budget range or if you want to spend £315 on a mid level Onkyo amp check out this sightandsounduk.com/cat…813

    Keep with the AV idea..

Get the Yamaha RXV565 - i have one.. Bloody fantastic imo.. 4x HDMI, up conversion and upscaling to 1080p etc..

    digitaldirect.co.uk/yam…tml £260 inc next day

    Then get 4x Q Acoustic 1010i

    richersounds.com/pro…rry

That take you to your £350 budget pretty much.. If they dont have the cherry 1010i's in, they'll have the black ones which are £50.

Buy a centre and sub later on.. 1000ci centre will be £80 - sub around £100-150.

Will I tell a difference between the STRDH800 and this?

My budget was £350 for an AV and speakers

AV looks pretty good actually, does that carry audio over HDMI? How does this compare to others of similiar price?

I've had my eye on these speakers for some time now which also includes sub:

Yerp carries audio over HDMI - really is a cracking amp.. Had it since Friday.. Dead chuffed.

Was gonna go for the Denon 1610 - but quite a few guys on avforums told me to go for this.. Don't regret it one little bit.

The 1010i would give you a better sound imo, as i demo'd that speaker set in richers.. But it's still a great 5.1 set.

That 5.1 would work great with the amp to ye - i would spend out the extra if i were you and buy both.

I'm pretty new to all this also

Looking around - i've pretty much seen everyone **** off Sony amps with the exception of the 1000 version.. I don't believe there is much in it tbh, it looks like Sony got a bad rep years ago and it's sorta haunted them ever since.

Plus another problem is you've got allot of Yamaha and Denon fanboys about, who'll fight to the teeth arguing which one is best.

But as far as a general opinion on amps, what i've seen is that if you either go for a Denon or Yamaha amp, you can't go wrong. I personally went for the Yamaha as allot of people reccomended it over the Denon 1610 to me, but then you'll find allot of people reccomending the Denon 1610 over the Yamaha 565.. So i reckon either one and you'd be sorted :). I prefer the Yamaha due to the 7.1 and 4 HDMI ports.

I can tell you this though - i had Transformers 2 bluray going yesturday and Planet Earth.

    It sounded.. Absolutely.. Incredible.

Even the father inlaw was godsmacked.

The 800 is 7.1 aswell.

Yeah - think the Sony 1000 was seen in a more positive light because of the nice design.

I get the impression that more modern Sony amps are very good - just as i said - Haunted by previous opinions. You'll find most write ups are by die hard audiophiles - who are about as impartial as.... Something that isn't very impartial lol.

I like the Sony DH800 myself, however it seems i'm getting better value for money if I went for the Yamaha RX-V565 and I think the Yam is a bit better looking. I have a Sony TV and Blu Ray player so would be nice to have the Sony to match and I could probably use one controller (bravia sync?), however i'm not bothered about that really and I actually prefer to use the seperate remotes with devices. So the Sony or the Yamaha...Decisions!

But the thing to remember is that the Yamaha's actually a more expensive amp that has dropped in price a lot, where as the Sony isn't that much less than it launched at.

Thanks for those, i'll take a look later. Yeah the Yamaha is an earlier model and it appears the 765 is the newer one so i think thats why it has dropped in price.

Yerp - as the reviews suggest the 565 was at a price point where it was in the same bracket as the Denon 1910 budget wise.. Now it's dropped to £240 odd ex delivery, it's spot on for anyone looking to go into the mid+ range.
