Surround Sound Help, Confused!

Found 25th May 2008
Okay so just bought a new TV the Panasonic TH42PX80, and wanted to get surround sound, now im a little bit confused all the systems i seen in the shop have a dvd player thinh with them, but i dont want that as i have my ps3, now im getting slightly confused with all the connections.

I want to have surround sound when im watching sky+ and when im useing my ps3, i know the ps3 has the digital out connection and so does the sky+ box, but i dont think the tv has it, so is it possibe for the sky+ and my pse to work with the surround sound without changing the wires every time? also is it possibe to get a surround sound setup without the dvd player as all the speaker wires fit in to it, any help would be appricated thanks.

Hello, sounds like you need an A/V Receiver. This way you can connect all your devices to it (they have many inputs). You will have to buy the speakers separately though. Having recently upgraded, I have one for sale at the moment. P.M me if you want further details

:oops:As the previous post suggests, if you want to get surround sound coming out of the speakers, without sirecting it all via the DVD, you will need a separate AV receiver.

Alternatively, you can use the DVD as an output (probably) select the TV function, and turn your TV speakers to the OFF position. The s3 can be connected as can Sky+. Its not so much the inputs, it is where the Output is set..... (i.e your DVD)

So, route them all through the AUX (or similar) on your DVD in the short term.... Turning yourTV speakers off, this should direct the sound through the 5 speaker (or similar) dvd speakers....

Or once yu get everything you could just get an optical splitter

try ]kenable.co.uk there good, fast and cheap

The advantage of an AV receiver is that you don't have to buy a splitter, and you are not tied in to using the DVD player supplied with the all-in-one DVD cinema systems.
I'd say that a good AV Receiver is more flexible, gives better sound, and can have more features such as: radio tuner, multi room capability, Video switching / upscaling/ upconversion, equalisation controls, auto setup.

Once you have used a good AV receiver you will realise the limitations of the all-in-one DVD surround systems which don't offer any good upgrade path.

Even if you don't buy mine, I'd say that a Receiver is a better choice

Ive been looking at the AV recivers and they seem quite expensive, i thought by using my ps3 as the dvd player it would be cheaper, so am i right in thinking if i bought one of thise home cinema packages like the ones you see in currys, all my connections for the audio, ps3 ans sky+ could go through that?

Yeah....you will need to go through the optical on PS3 once you get a package, you just need an optical lead, again try the link above

True, but depending on the number of devices you want to connect, I doubt one of the all-in-one DVD systems has enough connectors. At best it probably has one optical and/or one digital coaxial.

So you would most likely have to keep swapping cables as they could not all be connected simultaneously. Also, the PS3 has an excellent DVD player which can upscale content. So do you really need another DVD player that may not upscale to a full 1080p resolution?

If you want a cheap brand new AV receiver, visit the Richer Sounds website, that have a whole range from budget (starting at £99) to bank-busting (£999)!

Alternatively, you could buy a speaker package with the decoder built into the subwoofer, so you get surround sound from your PS3 at a lower price point without getting another DVD player. Acoustic Solutions make cheap ones that you can get on egay for about £25 I believe

Now the audio from my speakers ps3 and sky+ could all connect to this right? also this may sound like a dumb question but how does the av reviver connect to my tv?

You could run a component-out from the amp to the component-in on your TV, if your TV has one. Otherwise you could use the composite video output. It says it has two audio optical inputs, and two component inputs so you could connect your PS3 and Sky+ at the same time via optical for audio, and component input for video.

Or you you could just connect your PS3 and Sky+ to your TV via HDMI and just route the audio via the amp using optical
