Surround sound sky hd sports

I have a onkyo tx-sr308 and I'm watching the QPR v Forest, I've only got the sound coming from the front speakers, I'm sure I've watched the football before with the back speakers producing crowd noise. I'm thinking I'm not getting a 5.1 input through the sky channel, but is there a way of getting sound out of the rear speakers.

can only think that you need to check the sound settings on your sky box

optical cable required, dont think 5.1 via hdmi.

i don't know, i'm just trying to offer a constructive reply to remedy the problem. BTW is he using an optical cable? because nothing constructive about your comment.

Not using Sky HD (just normal Sky), but we get this occasionally. I think it may be linked to volume, as it appears to cure itself if we turn the volume up (i.e. the back speakers only work above a certain volume).

Sorry for the slow reply, will check the sky settings, will try turning up volume, connected with a hdmi cable, I have watched football and movies on sky hd on this set up and got surround sound.
Ps3 connected with an hdmi and get surround sound, so I'm unsure if longbow is correct on what he says about hdmi cables, can some one clarify, or come up with any other theories.
