Swapping HDD from one Dell to another: Potential problems?

Quick question to the initiated: Will I have a problem taking a HDD from an Inspiron 531 and sticking it in my Vostro 200? Is their a potential motherboard conflict, and if so, what is the worst that can happen? I don't mind trying it to see if it works but don't want to risk messing one or other system up. Note that I want to swap the drives with OS included (the 531 has Vista Premium, the Vostro Vista Business) And advice will be appreciated.

I would back up any essential data first.

No risks in trying it, worse that can happen is it won't boot Windows, so … No risks in trying it, worse that can happen is it won't boot Windows, so just swap them back, No damage will be done.

That's the main question I wanted answered. Cheers.

Others agree with this? Not that I don't trust a badass :-D but it would reassure me to hear others' opinions too.

Well would could happen is that when you put it in the new PC Windows tries to install new drivers or setup new hardware.

If that fails, and you decide to put it back in your old PC, you MAY have problems as some of the Windows settings may have changed.

One option is to create a disk image BEFORE you move it. Products like Acronis True Image allow you to take a disk image of your current hard disk, and you can restore if all else fails.

btw, after you move the hard disk from the old PC to the new PC go into the Bios and let it update the BIOS with the new hardware details BEFORE you go into Windows.

If you go straight into Windows without going into the BIOS first then Windows could get very confused.

Cheers guilbert, that's the kinda stuff I wanna here. Optimistic but cautious - and with a backup plan in case it all goes pear-shaped. Muchas gracias amigios.

it depends on the chipset of the relevant dells. windows should attempt to load in the new drives and if it goes pear-shaped you should be able to revert to the original machine. however in the real world i've seen an attempt like yours corrupt the installation so badly that the drive wouldn't boot in either machine. it then needed a clean install. personally i would borrow a third disk and use this as a buffer to clone the drives until the data was swapped between them. this would take much longer but would be perfectly safe. Yup, had that happen once when I treid to put a mate's old HDD into another PC I was giving him. Kept getting the Blue Screen Of Death when it tried to boot into Windows. Good luck!
