Swine flu vaccine for under 5's....

Are you allowing your child to have it? I am so torn, and any additional help/advice from experts would be great!!

    Experts?

I think you need the medical profession, not a deals forum.

Personally, if my kids were that age, I wouldn't have it done.

Ive been discussing this too with my hubbie tonight as I have 2 under 5's. Will probably get them done even though I hate the thought of the vaccine swimming around their little bodies!
Better than them being really ill though.

My oh had his last friday and said that his arm hurt so much afterwards, felt dead etc (maybe he's just a wuss?) He said if he felt like that how would our lo's feel?
He also just found out yesterday that they were guinea pigs for a new batch so don't even know if their jab will protect them!

What is the risk involved then? im not upto clue about this kind of thing!

i'm soo unsure about this. don't think we ever get the full picture on these things:thinking:

i wont be getting mine doneone of them had swineflu and it wasnt so bad thankfully

I am torn too. Both mine are under 5, my youngest is under 1. Watching the news just now I am swaying towards givng it to my 4 year old as she interacts with kids at school, I may hold off on my baby.

    Still not 100%.

Don't experts use internet sites? Theres all walks of life on this place.....vets, Drs, teachers etc....like i said i asked for advise, i didn't ask for decision making.

i have a 4 year old and a 20 month old. I will not be getting mine done. we know nothing much about the jab and i am not letting them have that kind of stuff floating round there little bodies.

It is FLU. Swine flu is less harmful by far than "normal flu", and have they been vaccinated against that? I don't think so! People need to man up! Stop pumping your body full of drugs!

i'm sure its not that simple as the goverment wouldn't waste money they haven't got because people, kids, old and sick can't MAN UP :whistling:

But as parents of under 5's we are given the option, yes it is FLU but the cases that end up in hospital and even death are scary!

Yes I know people will say 'less people die of seasonal flu blah blah' doesnt make you less worried as a parent though.

lol he did say it's still tender now nearly a week later.
I'm not so sure about mine having it done, have a nearly 2 yr old and a 4 and a half year old. Maybe as a pp said I may be swayed towards having my son done as he's in full time school.

I declined my offer, i'm also thinking of declining babes as shes not really mixing with other people. I am so stuck though.

Flu kills over 4000 people a YEAR in the UK. Swine flu has killed, to date, 100. Most of which have been ill already.
There's a word for this. Mass hysteria.

mine are both older than 5 but i dont think i would be giving it them if there was a choice, they are both healthy children

Your little one is about the same age as my little girl (2next week) isn't she? I don't think I will be letting her have it, as you say they don't reall mix with many people

its not a live vaccine..it wont give them the illness for there bodies to produce antibodies against it like other vaccines do.

Ive got a 2 year old and a 3 year old and havent been asked anything about the jab yet either. Maybe it depends on where you live

214 deaths in Uk so far of which 1 in 5 are under 14, Unlike seasonal flu which causes more deaths in the elderly,

so 40 deaths of children under 14, where those children vunerable, meaning would the normal flu have had the same result, or where they healthy, fit children

My littliest is 2 today and i had to cancel her party as she has a virus - I swear she's ill with virus's every 3 months or so. We go to a playgroup 2-3 mornings a week so she picks up everything! Its worrying!

"Analysis of the ages of flu fatalities carried out by the department show that in a normal seasonal flu year 94% of deaths are among those aged 65 and over. In this swine flu outbreak, 21% of deaths are among those aged 14 and under, while 39% are among 15- to 44-year-olds

My son is 10 but suffers from asthma but they woulnt ket him have it yet,

seems very strange that they are not injecting the most vunerable, from the figures below those least vunerable are being given the injection

From the guardian - In this swine flu outbreak, 21% of deaths are among those aged 14 and under, while 39% are among 15- to 44-year-olds.

well i have three under five and will not be getting them the vaccine, why because they have no idea of the long term side effects yet, look at the side effects of the tamiflu drug that they were giving people they didnt find that out until people already had been given it! now they are only giving it out to more serious cases, perhaps if they had tested it properly before then they would know about this, so it makes me wonder about the vaccine, what dont they know about it yet? i guess they thought they would test it out on the most vunerable first?!?

and then there is the mmr cover up! dont get me started on that

Yes agree with you there with the ordinary flu its the elderly or ill that may die but with swine flu, some people that have died have had no health problems and have been young so it is scary, think I will get my kids done but it is a hard decision to make cause you just dont know.

Please don't anyone rush into this without considering the side effects first. Apart from common effects (these include vomiting, lethargy, upset stomach and flu like symptoms), experienced by people I know, Guillain–Barré syndrome is the one to make note of (Causes paralysis and death if untreated). When there was the last swine flu outbreak in the 70s, many people were diagnosed with this condition, and the vaccination scheme was scrapped.

Why? Because in response to mass mysteria generated by the media, the government act on this immediately, therefore making everyone happy. Tamiflu is a good example of why we shouldnt act on what we're offered. Tamiflu causes serious gastrointestinal upset, which could have been avoided by thousands had the government bought the drug Relenza which is just as effective and with a much smaller side effect percentage.

    I wouldn't touch it with a stick!

Not that my opinion counts for anything, but I thought this might help some people decide. (By the way search for Guillai-Barre syndrome, it's an interesting read).

hI, I got my swine flu jab 2 weeks ago as work in the health setting, yes my arm was sore for a couple of days later, could not sleep on it.This has now eased, i then had to make a deci sion about my 3 year little boy who has asthma and has been hospitalised as a baby due to this, after alot of research and alot of tears shed- as to am I doing the right thing, he got the injection which is half the dose of an adults and then he gets a further dose in the three weeks time.

No one can make the decision, it is a personal choice, which makes it so difficult,

im no Expert but do have 4 children 2 are under 5 and have had swine flu both got given tami flu meds along with my 11 year old as she has Asthma but if she didnt the doc would have left her to ride it out on her own i also have Asthma and got my swine flu jab yesterday and my arm is killing me i can just about move it and i feel like **** i for one will not be taking my kids for the jab as yes my kids at the time felt like **** couldnt eat and my 1 year old was sick as a pig for days but they got over it i will not have my children in the pain im in now as its 100% going to hurt but only a 50/50 they get swine flu i think for a normaly well child or one with well looked after Asthma its no worse than normal flu and i feel after having my 3 girls (son never gets anything lol ) and my mates girl bad with it for a week and having myself had the jab i would take the 50/50 my kids have had all the other jabs so this is not a i dont want them having jabs thing more a iv seen both sides and they both have good and bad

I think this is really the heart of the matter.
It is the "what if" problem.
What if I have the vaccine and there are worrying side-effects?
What if I don't have it and they get swine flu, and they already have an underlying medical condition that we don't know they have, and something awful happens?
It's the lesser of two evils I suppose .
I have two under 5 (one only 6 months). We have not been offered it yet, but for anyone with children it is a decision which needs a lot of thought.
No need to be flippant about it as some have been (presumably those without babies and young children).

Trouble is you can die if you have an underlying condition, kids may already have a condition that you dont know about.

Its tough we have a 2yr & 6yr old and dont know what to do, saying that the flu jab has been around for years
