Taking a dog on the train? Anyone had any trouble?

I'm contemplating a trip to London tomorrow from Leeds, but I don't want to book anything until I know for sure if I'll have trouble taking me dog onboard! The rules say:

    nationalexpresseastcoast.com/On-…ts/

I don't like that word "usually".

Anyone travelled with their dog before? Any problems?

She's only little, can stay on my lap but I'd rather she didn't so I'd try and cheekily stick her on a seat (if there's one free). And I don't have a travel crate for her, not that you'd put a dog in one really, a bit unpractical given the size (she's small, but not that small!).

    Any help appreciated!

I'd be royally annoyed if you had a dog on a seat even if it was free, … I'd be royally annoyed if you had a dog on a seat even if it was free, I'd complain. Anyways I'm not sure about the rules of it sat on the floor.

    Would you? Aww, I'm sorry

    Might I ask why?

I used to work for a train company and I never stopped anyone with dogs before

But I think it's best to phone up company in the morning and ask if it is ok, then take the name of whoever you are speaking to, or ask to speak to a manager, and then if anyone says anything you can say you were told it would be ok!

Hope all goes well for you

    Merry Christmas :santa:

Would say it would be ok,

Think you'd complain about anything dude, need to chill
    Good times

Just put some dark sunglasses on and yer sorted.

Serious note though, my mum takes her dog on the train with no problems.

Although I have to agree with dcx, I think a few people would be annoyed if the dog was put on the seat, especially if it is busy and they couldn't get a seat. But people do have to travel with animals so I imagine there is someway that you can, like you say I am not sure about carriers?

I wouldn't like to see a large dog on a seat on a busy train, I think i'd not be bothered with a small dog on a quieter train though.

    Cheers for the replies, guys.

munnski - a carrier isn't really an option. Dogs aren't like cats where you could put them in a crate just big enough for them to lay down in and they'd be content - I don't think my pup'd appreciate that, it would agitate her. (the only option would be to get a big crate like the one I have at home, but that's about 1m squared all round and would be a nightmare to carry/set up!)

I can always sit her on my lap..done it in a car down before, a journey a good two hours longer than the train!

I totally agree Gash, I don't think dogs would take very well to carriers! I don't even like cats in them but I don't think people would like a cat running around a train ;-)

A small dog on a seat would be fine I think, again aslong as it's not too busy, then you could just move her onto your lap until it becomes less busy

    Anyways, have a nice journey

I can appreciate that some people'd not like to see a dog on a seat, period. But why would it matter if it were a small or large one sat on it?! (I mean, as long as they fit right?)

Saying that, my Olivia's hardly that big and she's the cleanest doggy you'll ever meet!

Awwww now isn't she just adorable! I would be too busy petting her to notice she was stealing my seat anyways ;-) :giggle:

Gash - you just melted my cold heart with that picture.

Would have no problem with it just been on the train normally though, sat on the floor, as long as it didn't lick me. :-D

Fair enough. It's just that, from my point of view, it'd be easier to control her if she was on the seat next to me than by my feet.

Awww...cuuuute! Is she a Shar Pei puppy?
I must admit I don't think dogs - of any size - should be on the seats, but see no reason why she wouldn't be allowed on the train by your feet. Just keep her on a lead and she'll have enough space to curl up. If its a long-ish journey and if she has a little blanket or small bed at home why not pop it on the floor so she'll (hopefully) settle.
Oh, and make sure she has a good wee and poop first or else you could find yourself having to get off at a random stop and be stuck in the middle of nowhere for hours! Puppies wee when they get excited - it could be an interesting journey for you!

    Awwww I want one :-D

thats such a cool dog, i wouldnt have a problem with the dog, but some people are like scared of dogs (no matter how cute) so it wud only be fair to those people if the dog was in a carrier, but then i dont think they should be put in carriers either, hope u find a way to keep every1 happy including the dog

take a white stick and some sunglasses just in cases.

if you get into any trouble act like she's your guide dog - who's got the heart to take a guide dog off of a blind person? .

Ha. She'd probably make the sh*ttest blind dog.. bit of a maniac at the best of times!

It'd be highly unconvincing and they'd probably rip my shades off to boot! :-D

I love dogs and I have taken my own golden lab on many train journeys

I always make a point of sitting him on the floor though

I would never sit a dog on a train seat no matter what size he was

I reckon that's just basic manners / hygiene

Got a few friends who are ridiculously allergic to dogs/ and other pets so would prob think twice before taking it on a train, i know its short haired but apparently its not the hair thats the problem for allergy sufferers, (the dander?)

On a side note, i couldnt say that dog is cute lol, tis like calling a bulldog cute ::whistling:

    Gl though

No way should a dog sit on a seat of any public transport in my eye. It's just not hygenic or nice for the next person.

Up to you what you allow in your own home - but to put that on to other people aint fair...

Ok i have travelled a fair few times on trains with my pooch (black labrador). I carry a little picnic blanket in my bag and put it on the floor where she curls up to sleep. On very quiet trains she has been on the seat - BUT its always on the (waterproof backed) picnic blanket so she couldnt mark the seat. I have never had a problem taking her on trains.

I did spend some time before out first journey getting her used to staying on her blanket, we went on trips to places and i would get her to sit and stay on the blanket. She now knows that if the blanket is out she is meant to sit on it and sleep! job done and she is a happy traveller!

it is a dog, it goes on the floor. there shouldnt be any issues i would have thought as long as the dog sits in its appropriate place which is the floor.

why would you put a dog on a chair? does it use your toilet?

You know them times when people try to seem clever, but come across as though they should have been in special needs a as a kid..

Being a train driver I see lots of people take all different shapes and sizes of dogs on the train. I've never seen any trouble doing this. Apart from the time that some blokes dog ran onto the train just as I was closing the doors. He accused me of trying to steal it!!! :w00t:

yeah they tend to be people who take dogs on a train and let them sit on a chair instead of the floor.
