Taking delivery of a new car...Does this sound right? What would you do?

    Banned
    .

Arranged last week for my new car to be delivered today, which I checked again yesterday afternoon, was still the case. (It was)

At 10 this morning I can a call from the office of the delivery people. "Can we deliver it tomorrow"..... I explain I'd taken a day off work, so its wasnt possible as I couldnt be here anyway. She says she'll call back.

At 11.15, I call back as Ive not heard anything from them. "Its all sorted, its on its way"... Good stuff.... Yeh it will be there late afternoon. OK sorted.

Then I think, hang on..... what sort of time! I certainly wasnt going to sign as inspected if it was dark. (and now worse as its peeing down!) So I call back and told it should be here between 3.30 and 4. OK, I can relax now.....

Then I get a phone call from the guy delivering. He said he should have the car in about 20 minutes, but needed me to do a favour as he needed to pick something up about a further 30 miles away! I still dont know what he wants (when I asked if it was a lift, he said no.... but needed to pick the other car up by 4.45 before they close and mentioned he'd have to look up train times. I still havent a clue what he wants.

The thing that concerns.... he's mentioned train times. Do you think this means hes driving the car and not on a transporter? Its coming from "Middlewich" (sp) which he said was Manchester. I'm buying a new car, not one thats probably been thrashed on a motorway (as he's in a hurry) mileage clocked up... and delivered in the dark and wet.

Obviously once you sign, thats it, doesnt matter what you find after he's left.... any marks etc are down to me.

Obviously its a dilemma. A £16K car is a fair chunk of cash. This must happen often I guess, but i'd kick myself if I signed in poor light and visibility and found something later..... plus dont like the sound of an extra 250 miles stuck on the clock.

    What would you do?

If its a normal thing, I suppose I cant complain... just dont know if this is normal or not. Its a very long drive if it is! I always thought "delivery mileage" meant about 10 miles or so.

if the pair of you agreed terms of the purchase and they are not fully done i wouldn't be happy......

I have had three new cars delivered (purchased through a work scheme) and all were driven to me. About 30 miles was on each one and each wanted a lift to the train station after. I guess he will want a lift to the train station and your car will have been razzed. If in doubt call the manager from where your buying it from.

That sounds a bit odd to me, I'd have thought even if it was just the one car being delivered it would be on the back of a small transporter vehicle. I've only ever picked up my vehicles direct from the garage though and arranged my own transportation.

    John

You must have the right to check it in daylight and get any dinks/chips etc fixed.
Sign receipt but mark it clearly "vehicle not checked" before you do so.
Call supplier and let them know that you are doing this.

Quite common for cars to be delivered by the driver - best check this out with the gangsters you bought it from, Guv.

I bought it online. There was no mention of it being driven to me. It was described as "delivered" which is something different to me.

Its not an issue to drive the guy to the station. I think he wanted me to drive him somewhere that would take me an hour to get to! (Ive just spoken to the company - theyve confirmed he wouldnt be expecting that!

30 miles wouldnt be a problem.... but 250 is a bit much to me!

Well Ive just spoken. They said "its what we do - drive cars to their new owners". As I said above, I wouldnt be too bothered if they were local. Manchester is far from local.... Plenty of time for stone chips! And thats the other thing. Its peeing down. Nothing like an easy way to hide damage!

He's now at Luton apparently.... He's obviously gone like the clappers!

On the plus side, its not been raining here:-D

Thats whats alerted me to the problem. It basically says they are not responsible unless its pointed out at the time.

Gangsters? I think you've got me mixed up with someone else. You're only picking on me because I'm an atheist.

This is normal practice. I had a similar situation but when found out car was going to be driven from Manchester to London, I arranged to travel to Manchester to collect it myself. A trailer or transporter delivery can be arranged but costs extra (quite alot extra!!). I'd sign the delivery note 'unchecked' and note the weather & visibilty conditions on the note including time & date.

I am sorry that I don't know what to say, other than, I would share your concerns and be quite anxious. I perhaps being a little paranoid would have made the trip to the seller and picked up the car from them. If any of the purchase price was paid on a credit card then the card company will have equal liability with regard any disputes that cannot be resolved.

Perhaps photograph or video the car whilst the delivery man is with you, include the mileometer etc. Perhaps if it has an onboard computer it will indicate the average speed the car has been travelling.

    What car is it, Daddy?

I ordered mine online & then rang them up to confirm delivery.

It was free if driven/picked up or £250 by loader.

I just got it driven here, fair distance mind but I couldnt be arsed with train fares & messing about !

Can't help with your car situation though. Although in the trade delivered usually does mean driven... nine times out of ten you have to pay extra for it to be on a trailer. Did they give you no indication it would be coming from Manchester?

Nothing wrong with a Kia, I had a Kia Ceed on a 3 day free test drive a while back, I was highly impressed.

The 7 year warranty speaks volumes about their quality, no other maker can get anywhere near it.

Technically, neither have you now :-D

I get my driver to take care of that side of things:p

Never mind the chips, wait till you get the speeding tickets through the letter box, make sure you clearly sign it for the correct delivery time and watch for them making it earlier just in case, never mind the swedish guy commiting 15 motoring offences in 10 minutes, it'll be clocked by every camera enroute:w00t:

I added a note to my delivery slip saying car would be inspected within 48 hours.

I had the delivery guy sign it as well.

Good job as I found a massive stone chip on it that they paid to get sorted out

Thing is, if I saw a massive stone chip, Id refuse delivery. So signing and pointing out, means a repair..... or not being repaired. Either way, Ive accepted the car.

According to them, it'll be here in 30 minutes

    Hurrah.... It's arrived. :-D

Everything looks fine, though it was wet and a bit dirty, wiping over suspicious bits didn't reveal anything.

Had 230 on the clock in the end. (He said it had 6 miles on it when he picked it up.)

And yes, I had to drop him off at the station.... half way to his destination (for a better train service) 'cos I'm a kind hearted guy.

Now to insure and take for a spin.....

Its so much more fun in a real car rather than pretend ones.
