Taking Laptop Abroad - Security advice

Do security go through your files on laptop?

And do scanners harm files in your laptop?

    Thanks

yes they do and will find your pron folder really quickly!

unless they have good reason then no they dont as they would need a warrant to do so, and unless its a magnetic scanner then your files will be safe. I presume you mean the xray scanners?

Under no circumstances allow your laptop near the new flux scanners though as this causes the liquid crystals in the screen to freeze, for which you need a photon laser to unfreeze them all, this would cost more than the laptop, even to hire one.

have never checked mine and scanners never affected mine either.

Now thats out the way, any helpful answers! :P

I took my laptop abraod for the first time this year, you can take it as hand luggage seperately, ask them not to put it through scanners and manually check it. Or on my way back i was sleepy and couldn't be bothered so stuck it through the scanner, no probs as of yet!

ive taken mine thru the airport several times, they make ya take it out the case n put it in one of the trays to go thru xray machine but they never actually powered it on or checked it in any other way. And my files never been harmed at all!

    nope!!

I fly regularly with my laptop and I have (rarely) been asked to turn it on.

What I do now is to turn it on before security and then put it into standby mode. If you're not planning to use it the other sidfe of security, shut it down completely again to save battery power when you're through.

Although this is extra hassle either side of security, at least if you ever do get asked to turn it on it's a far, far quicker process for everyone concerned.

never been asked to power it up. just taken out of the bag and they look at it as if looking for a panel for hiding drugs. mine's a mac so quite thin dont think there will be much drugs there ... they always ask you to separate it out from your hand luggage, and it's never been through the scanners either. this is between london and ireland, not sure if anywhere else is the same. hope that helps.

Yes, they can go through your files!

Even worse, they can hold your laptop, or retain your HDD, make permanent copies, without a warrant........you're living in "La La Land", in denial, .......It's naive to presume otherwise.

    see www.theregister.co.uk

apparently in the US there is an increasing number of cases where border control go through the file. if encrypted/you refuse they will retain the laptop.

They can go through your files if they want. You can encrypt the files that you dont want them seeing and you dont legally have to give them the encryption key, they can try and break it or blag it off you, make sure you use a strong encryption.

as i said above in the US this won't work as they will simply keep the laptop. so, ok they won't get at your files, but neither will you.
