Taking laptop on holiday for first time...worried about charges?

Only ever used a laptop in the house before, but in a few weeks we will be taking my new netbook away with us.
I have heard lots of scare stories about people getting home and finding out they owe large bills because they have been downloading abroad. Not sure if this is just phones or laptops as well.
What can i do with the netbook ..
Read and send emails with attachments like photos.
    Browse the web.
    Use MSN
    Play an on line game?
    Watch something like iplayer
If the hotel says free wi fi where would any costs be?
Sorry i am being a cavewomen again, the techno age passed me by.
Thanks will give rep for anyone who can inform my brain we are living in the 21st century.
The netbook is on its way from amazon as we speak a samsung n220 very excited.

If there's free wi-fi you'll be fine. It's only if you start using dongles etc you will have to pay costs. Or if the hotel charges for the wi-fi password etc.

    Whereabouts are you travelling to?

Goofeys Girl...is your husband goofey? unless it's the new iPad you won't incur costs unless your netbook has 3G. Mcdonalds do free wifi abroad.

Egypt went last year and loved it, relaxing for us, water slides etc for kids but very limited night life so thought having netbook with us might be handy for evening after the meal particularly for the kids to watch a program, play a few games or just email mates with pics of holiday etc.

Will have to check 3G dont think it has it but thanks for mentioning that.
Its hard getting the kids out of Mcdonalds over here....i will have to tell them its camel meat to stop them wanting to go in over there.

Never thought of that...perhaps i will have to have a glass of wine in my hand on every pic might get away with it then.

Make sure it is fully insured.
Only go online when you can get free wi-fi and you won't have any nasty charges.

You'll be able to watch films etc off the hard drive without internet. It might be worth installing some games before you go. If there's no free wi-fi it might be worth taking an unlocked internet dongle and using a local pay as you go sim. No idea of costs in Egypt though.

Hi i sent an email to the hotel and they said wifi was free in the rooms but you would have to ask for a password at reception. Is this normal. While I love Egypt they do tend to scam people. Worried that i would be charged at end of holiday.
I will take the email with me as proof.
If wifi is free do you normally still need a password.?
