Teaching Assistant interview

I have an interview later this morning and my children's school and I am so nervous, I want this job so badly as it would be perfect for me and I have made the shortlist from over 30 applicants.

Does anyone have any idea of the type of questions I am likely to be asked

I have researched the Every Child Matters policies.......anything else I might need to know to help settle my nerves. I have no real experience of working in schools other than doing some reading with the children there

I help out at the mo too and when my little girl goes to school I would love to become a TA. They told me that helping out is the best way 'in' Sorry I can't help with the questions but good luck and keep us informed ;-)

i work in a school with children i do the network support end of it and remember that they are big on confidentiality, they always ask what would you do if a parent /carer approached you and started a conversation on any level about a/any child just remember and say that you would say to the person-you are not there to discuss anything to do with school/children and always direct them to smt (senior management team).
we had a parent who helped out for a while and when a job became available she came for interview and even though the only experience she had was through us she answered all the right questions and got the job! so good luck with your interview.

I shouldn't have thought they'd be too interested in Every Child Matters etc. I would suggest that their main interest would be in your relationship/rapport building abilities with the children. What attributes do you have...what would you do in a certain situation etc etc.

The interviewers will be more interested in you as a person than how many things you can remember about policies.

Good luck!!!!

All I can say if dress smart - be punctual - and act natural (don't try and bull...!

Oh and best of luck

EliTom

No idea what they might ask, but good luck!

FH - good luck hon I know how much this interview means to you. Can't really offer any advice - just be yourself and I'm confident your'll do fine

Hi

Always end an interview with something like

'do you have any reservations about my abilities do do this job, as I am very keen to work for you'

If they say no, that's great

If they say yes, you can then address any reasons and ensure you leave them with no doubts.

This also makes it very clear you really want the job

Best of luck!

i think their main priorities are the confidentiality and your relationship and abilties you can build with the pupils and being able to work under the class teacher which i am sure you will be absolutely fine and can express this during your interview

good luck fireheaven :friends:  let us know how you get on

The concern I would have as an interviewer there though is the negative slant you'd be putting on your abilities. Its as if the interviewee is pre-empting that they may not be up to the mark.

Thanks everyone - I had an interview yesterday and was nowhere near as nervous as I am this morning.

I will bear all your points in mind and am making notes as I read each one

Not really, because if you don't find out what the interviewers really think, you may leave something they see as an issue, when is really isn't one.

E.g. They say we are concerned about the distance you need to travel to work?
Answer - Not a problem I am getting a car next week.

Answered correctly it turns a negative into a positive and they will remember this when reviewing the interviews. Unquestioned it remains a concern when it never was one.

Hi

I had an interview 2 weeks ago for the same type of job. I was asked questions like "how would I contribute to a positive relationship with the parents, how I understood the confidentiality policy, why I wanted to work with children, how I would integrate a child with learning difficulties into the rest of the setting without them feeling isolated". There was only 6 questions in total. The advice I received was to be confident and to be myself.
Good luck anyway.

Kind of agree with both sides here.

If the interviewee thinks there are any open points or points that need further clarification then as the interviewer if they have any final questions. Nothing wrong with the interviewee questioning the interviewer in a positive way.

But as also mentioned the interviewee should not be seen as negative, and it takes a good deal of skill to turn a possible negative into a positive in the last seconds of an interview.

A good interviewer should not leave any open issues in their mind un-answered.

So I would say from experience from both sides of the table, if the interviewee thinks the interview has gone well then close on a positive note. However if the interviewee thinks they have more to info to offer or they think something has been misunderstood etc then use the reverse questions at the end to clarify and close on a positive note.

hope this makes sense - only the interviewee will know what to do in a particular situation

Makes perfect sense, it does take a certain amount of skill on the interviewee's part to be able to utilise the end of the interview well; definitely keeps the interviewers on their toes. When I've interviewed people, sometimes their closing comments have been the thing which has set them apart from their competitors, as you tend to see a little more of the true person.

Are you still there?
If so, yes they're often big on confidentiality. Like 'How would you deal with the situation where a child says that they have a secret problem but they'll only tell yuo if you promise to keep it a secret?'
Answer - try to find out but emphasise that you cannot keep a secret and pass info on to teachers, don't talk to child in isolation, don't be alone.

Discipline and learning situations - describe how you would deal with a situation where a child
swears at you
refuses to read/complete task
has a learning difficulty which you don't understand
hates a teacher

What would you do if you thought that a teacher was dealing unfairly with a pupil.

GOOD LUCK:thumbsup:

Thank you everyone - just got back and it seemed to go ok from their reactions.

The last question was whether they hadn't mentioned anything I expected them to so I mentioned the confidentiality aspect as they did not even touch on this.

that's strange and a bit worrying!

although I guess that will be included in your induction so maybe OK

What questions did they ask out of interest?

I actually think they left it out on purpose from their reaction

I have actually forgotton the questions but some of them were

- how would you encourage a child to do some work they were reluctant to do
- what would you do if you thought some work was too difficult for a child
- how do you think you would assist the teacher
- why are you right for this role

just keep applying for the positions that you want especially in other schools in the area...I have always worked in schools as the hours are fantastic and have always fitted around the kids.
You are quite within your rights to ask for feedback regarding the interview and if youhave been helping out Im sure they will be more than happy to give you some pointers and help towards future interviews.
Chin up Hels...I know its difficult as I had an interview as school Office manager 4 weeks ago and didnt get it.......then another position opened up for me and I have taken that one, slightly different as I am now kitchen assistant/ Cook 2 in my local school.....hours are great
