Tech help: Adding an DVD-ROM IDE drive to a Desktop with only SATA plugs * RESOLVED *

Guys, I have a Dell Vostro 200 with a DVD R/W (sata) drive already in there. I want to add a 2nd DVD ROM drive, but it's a IDE drive and I've looked at the system board components (see below) and there doesn't appear to be a connector. What are the options? I need to use this drive for its rawdump capabilities. Any help will be appreciated.

NOTE: I need to use this specific drive to back up wii games, so getting another SATA drive is not an option.

Use a USB / Firewire caddy for the drive.

Thanks both - Rep added! The converter is a bit pricey; was hoping to avoid this kind of price. I guess a caddy is cheaper, but will be slower slower...

Saw the review (below) for this:

Cons: It doesn't come with a SATA-power -> Molex converter, so I wasn't able to power my old drive with my new computer because the power supply didn't have any Molex power connectors.

Other Thoughts: I highly recommend purchasing a SATA to molex power converter (or vice-versa) if your new system's power supply doesn't have both power connectors.

Just confirmed that my desktop doesn't have a Molex power connector. Anyone got a link to a converter I can pick up? Have been looking around but getting a bit confused and don't want to but the wrong one. I think it's not this one I need, right? aria.co.uk/Pro…683

Would it not work out cheaper to just buy a SATA DVD Writer?

Edit: Sell your current one of t'ebay for a couple of pounds and then buy a SATA one, it is going to be a hell of a lot less messing aboutl.

The IDE drive is one of those rare ones that back up Wii & gamecube games.

ah fair enough, however I think the one you linked to on Aria is the wrong way round. Your wanting to connect a IDE/Molex style drive to a SATA set of cables, where that convert is convert SATA drives for molex connectors.

Yes, thanks - that's what I thought. Can't seem to find the right one though. Suppose I can give scan a call and ask them.

Thanks for that - adding rep  was hoping to get a UK site and cheaper but they seem really hard to find. Will keep looking and keep this one on the back-burner if no joy. Thanks again.

Remember you need to power both the adapter and the drive .

    You've lost me :? What's the adaptor?

EDIT: Oh right, the SATA-IDE Bilateral Converter Board from DX, right? Gotcha!

Btw, update just fyi. Phoned Scan and they recommended this - seems the least bothersome internal option. I will go for it tomorrow if I don't get an offer on the other thread scan.co.uk/Pro…057 Seems the easiest internal option. Unless I get an offer for something on here in the next day or so I will go for it Thanks again for all the help
