Tech Help Please: Do I need to install RAM in pairs?

Hi, I have just purchased a graphics card for my PC and thought whilst installing it I would also increase my RAM. I have four slots and two are currently occupied by 2 x 1gb DIMM Ram. I have decided to purchase a 1gb ram stick but now wondered if I would be better buying another so I would be installing two matching sticks of RAM. Does anybody know if I can install RAM not in pairs? Many thanks

it depends on your software... if you're just using regular Windows XP/Vista etc then 3gb will most likely be all that will be used.

if you install in pairs you get the advantage of the pc using dual channel mode. but you don't have to. if you're running a 32bit version of windows then your best solution would be to install 2 x 512mb dimms you'd get the benefit of dual channel as well

thanks for your help guys - rep left, i'm running Windows Vista, I'll see how I get on installing the 1gb of ram I got delivered today and see what it runs like, for £8.99 from Amazon it won't break the bank to add another stick if I need too

He does sort of have a point though - if Windows has more memory available to it the way it allocates and caches out memory to applications and the kernel is improved - however, 3GB operating in single-channel mode will overall likely be slower than 2GB is dual-channel mode. The way Windows reports the amount of memory in use is a bit misleading - for example I'm currently using only 43% of my physical memory, but only 31MB is actually 'free'...

I didnt understand her point at all. Asked me how much ram i was using and answered 2gb (same as op), then said 'no wonder then'. Didnt make any sense at all but nothing new there,

anyway, the reliability & performance monitor is better than taskmanager for seeing true figures. Take manager said 1.16gb used out of 2gb but 0 free :w00t:

resource monitor was more accurate (59% physical ram used).

Perhaps I don't need the extra 1gb of RAM then, I just thought whilst I've got the case open to install the graphics card, I thought I'd add an extra 1gb especially as it was only £8.99 delivered.

How do I access the resource monitor on Vista csiman - to tell what percentage my current RAM is using?

click START and then start typing reliability and it will show up

I have 4gb in my comp.

Could just be vista using the available space to speed things up.

Doesnt sound right at all.

check resource monitor and sort by commit memory (kb) to see whats hogging it.

Mine uses about 900mb when main apps closed.

Sounds perfectly right to me.
Would be worried if it was still using a quarter of the available space and not utilising the remaining 3gb.

I think you need to read up a bit about memory. An operating system uses memory (optimum for vista is 2gb). It doesnt just use more memory cos its there! :whistling:
