    tech help required

I have an old laptop DVD-RW drive from a completly dead laptop that i'm about to recycle, as well as my current desktop, I want to get a notebook. Thus I would like an external optical drive to use with it. Are there caddy's that you can buy to turn an internal slimline laptop DVD-RW drive into an external drive powered by usb 2?

    rep for help, cheers.

i'm pretty sure it's sata...it's a relatively small connection, so i guess it must be.

that's exactly the sort of thing i was after, I don't expect you to know about specific dvd drives but would you have any idea if most laptop dvd are the same size and thus would physically fit inside this enclosure?

Some laptop makers replace the DVD drive's front plastic with a custom made one, so it looks nice on the laptop (Sony & HP to name two). These tend to be much bigger than the standard ones and can cause the drive to not open/close properly while installed in the USB enclosure.
Other than that it's one of the two will fit all drives (depending on whether you need SATA or PATA)

What make/model laptop did the drive come from?

Here is how to tell the difference:

IT's a PATA drive and the front plastic facia will likely have to be "cut down to size".

I had to do the same with my HP drive. Stanley knife worked a treat.

There are people on eBay selling drive facia. If you don't want to cut, try matching the hooks sizes/positions to one on sale (make sure it's slim enough) - they tend to be quite cheap.

so i would essentially need the PATA version you linked to above, however i'm guessing as it states only for thinkpads, it wouldn't be usable on anything else..?

Don't worry, it will work with any computer that has 2 USB ports (1 for data and 1 in case it needs more power).
