    Techie/pc help please

    Hi again,
Has anyone heard of NEC computers? I've not heard of them (but that doesn't mean anything!)

    And,

what do I need to purchase to make my sons computer wireless? I think it's a PCI internal wifi card or a USB stick? The simpler the better and if someone could recommend one, that would be great!

nec computers are c heapish manufacturer.......

to get wireless you need usb stick or a iunternal card ............ next you need a wireless router........ then using the software for the wireless card / dongle you need to connect to the router...... use windows wireless application or the one with your card....

you need your routers security key to connect to it , should be on the bacxk of it or in the manual

    Thanks.:)

I've got a router etc as I have a laptop which has built in wireless stuff so, if I buy a usb thingy, are they fairly straight forward to set up?:?

Rest assured there are A LOT WORSE makes than NEC! (Don't let that put you off by any means!!)

    Thank you:thumbsup:
    Thats reassuring:)

NEC are a massive company - 150,000 employees (twice the size of Dell!). There PC division tends to make more business machines than home computers but they are a reputable brand

If it's the NEC linked then they're a huge brand and have been going for years, NEC monitors especially have generally had a very high reputation and their home and semi-professional ones are one of the best LCDs you can buy at the moment.

Put it this way: NEC are so well known I assumed you were asking about a local company with a similar name until I saw Jah's post.

PCI cards tend to be better, but there can be a bit of messing around with having to install the software before the cards so USB is generally easy to plug in and out if you do mess it up.

if your router and laptop are allready set up than it should be fairly easy to set up your sons pc. When you buy the usb stick it should come with an installation disk. Follow the instructions on there and you shouldnt have many problems.

just buy a pci card (cheap from pc world / staples) plug it in a spare port on the mobo, just push in & should be detected when starting up pc .......

or do the dongle route ....... just plug it in & windows should find it ....... then configure windows to find your router

Wow, thanks for all the advise guys:)
    It's really helpful.
    I have repped you all:thumbsup:

One last thing, would I just be able to buy a USB from pc world?

(faevilangel, thank you for you advise about the pci thing but I have no idea "a spare port on the mobo" is:oops:)

on your motherboard you will have 3/ 4 slots empty at side of the board, probably grey colour...... they are long and thin with a small slit down middle, you push the card into that

the usb can be picked up from most pc places inc pc worls, staples, maplin, and even tesco

pc world are quite expensive though

it will be plug and play, takes 2 /3 mins to set up a wireless dongle
