    Our local has just had ]THIS installed.

    However, thats as far as they've got.

    As far as I can see, each till is connected tot a router, (with its own IP address) which I can access over a wireless network from the company laptop. What we need to do is assign a static IP address laptop by using USB adaptor.

    This is where it becomes hard.

    a) how do I assign a new IP address to a USB device
    b) if i was to do this, would this enable me to talk to both tills via the laptop

    more info can be added on request, as this is all I know atm.

    Why would you need to assign an IP address to a USB device? Wouldnt the tills be connected to the router, then the tills themselves given a static IP address? Then using a browser access the tills that way?

    You say you need to assign a static IP by using a USB adapter, but also say you need to give a usb adapter an IP address?

    sorry, dont think I explained myself properly. Tills are static IP as below...

    Till 1: xxx.xxx.x.1 (via linksys router)
    Till 2: xxx.xxx.x.50 (via linksys router)
    USB Adaptor/Laptop: Been told i need to set this as xxx.xxx.x.99

    then, using Casio on laptop, we can update prices, stock, etc etc, then send info to till to automatically update.. What i can't do, is get the laptop to talk to the tills, as it doesn't have a IP address.

    They also use another Wireless Network (Netgear), for Wi-Fi in Pub, and Accomodation Upstairs!!

    You can not give the USB adapter a IP address, but you can give the laptop/pc it is attached to a manual IP address on the same subnet as the tills so they can speak to each other.

    The laptop will pick up a auto ip address if the router has it DHCP server active. Regardless, you need to go into control panel -> Network, and change the TCP/IP from auto to manual. On the laptop this is.
    And enter the details in on that.

    IP = xxx.xxx.xxx.99
    Subnet = 255.255.255.0 (probably)
    Gateway xxx.xxx.xxx.1 (probably)

    I would imagin the tills would not be open to the wireless side of the router anyway, as that would be secure. The WIFI you are describing in the pub and upstairs will be separated from the network of the tills.

    So the laptop will scan for networks, see the till network, and join. It will obtain a DHCP IP from till 1, ip xxx.xxx.xxx.1 as you said before. All should work automatically??

    it finds the tills no problem. the company that sold them the Casio software said they need a static IP address on the laptop, and to by a USB Wireless Adaptor. :?:thumbsup:

    Ok, after you have autoconnected to the network and can see the tills, goto control panel -> Network, and TCP/IP, change from auto to manual and insert the ip addys like before manually, matching the automatic settings (Dos box type ipconfig) just changing the last to .99 like you need for the casio software.

    someone I've just spoken to says I need to confirm a MAC code for the router? :?

    Yes indeed you can give a specific IP to the laptop as long as the router supports it.

    YOu need the MAC address of the USB dongle, so plug it in to your laptop connect to the network, then click start > run > cmd > ok.

    Now in the command prompt type: ipconfig /all and press enter.

    This will give you a screen like this:

    Windows IP Configuration Host Name . . . . . . . . . . . . : … Windows IP Configuration Host Name . . . . . . . . . . . . : COMPUTER Primary Dns Suffix . . . . . . . : Node Type . . . . . . . . . . . . : Unknown IP Routing Enabled. . . . . . . . : No WINS Proxy Enabled. . . . . . . . : NoEthernet adapter Local Area Connection: Connection-specific DNS Suffix . : Description . . . . . . . . . . . : Broadcom NetXtreme Gigabit Ethernet Physical Address. . . . . . . . . : 00-19-BB-C7-12-97 Dhcp Enabled. . . . . . . . . . . : Yes Autoconfiguration Enabled . . . . : Yes IP Address. . . . . . . . . . . . : 10.0.10.4 Subnet Mask . . . . . . . . . . . : 255.255.255.0 Default Gateway . . . . . . . . . : 10.0.10.1 DHCP Server . . . . . . . . . . . : 10.0.10.1 DNS Servers . . . . . . . . . . . : 10.0.10.1 Lease Obtained. . . . . . . . . . : 25 January 2009 19:26:07 Lease Expires . . . . . . . . . . : 26 January 2009 19:26:07

    Now the line you after is the physical address:

    Physical Address. . . . . . . . . : 00-19-BB-C7-12-97

    Everyone is unique, so you then go to your router's control panel (type it's IP in to your browser), the you need to look for the DHCP settings and see if it allows you to add IP address reservations.

    You should then be able to assign that MAC address to the IP you need the laptop to use.

    Alternatively, set the DHCP range on the router as XXX.XXX.XXX.1 to XXX.XXX.XXX.98 then set your laptop up manually to use the XXX.XXX.XXX.99 address. (this is a bit more of a pain in the ass if you use the latop on other wireless networks as well as you will have to set it each time.
