teenager bank account & my family pics...

Hiall, i want to open a bank account for my 15yr old daughter. As she doesnt need anything much for xmas I thought I would open an account and stick few hundred quid in there. I want this to be a suprise so is there anyway I can open one in HER name and she has a cash point card to use as and when? or will she have to do it, which takes the suprise element away.

The Nationwide smart account is good.

Although you get a card to withdraw money from machines then spend, not just pay in shop with the card.

Wow a few hundred quid! thats a lot to be giving.

I think you may need her to but not sure, and even then they may sent the card and welcome letter and statement in her name so she may get them first and open them

I save all year and both my children have 500 pounds. which is alot less than some of my friends spend on there kids, I dont go over 500 each. Its just my daughter really doesnt need much so thought bank account with card would be up her street..

Thanks for advice all , i will check those accounts out tomorrow.
    xx

She has to sign for the card in the application, and if its her own account she had to sign to get it im afriad.

so long as you take her birth certificate and your passport then you can open an account anywhere for her - but they may get her to go into the branch to collect her atm card with proof of herself to sign the card in front of them because it has been opened by a third person (you)

The best interest rates (6%) is with Abbey's 'The Abbey Account' she can also have a visa electron card with the account if required. Save them carrying lots of cash about and gets them used to using cards.

yes but take your birth certificate too

She'll need to be present and have her birth certificate. You'll also need to provide 2 proofs of address, one a utility bill and perhaps a driving licence or passport.

This is to stop fraud and money laundering.

This is correct.... You can no longer open an account for anyone without them being present..... even a baby!

Why not just give her a cheque with a 'certificate' to explain what it's for and take her on the first day the Banks are open?

cheers all, maybe i will write her a cheque then she can pay it into her bank when she opens it.

That's what I was going to suggest  If you get all the application forms together and paperwork, get them all filled out and signed, apart from the ones she needs to do than maybe put the cheque together with the application forms and let her open them all together so she can see she'll be getting her own visa electron card, or whichever route you go down. Then as soon as the banks open after christmas, she can take the paperwork in with you and open her account, lucky girl

Dont take this the wrong way but that still is a massive amount, My monthly income is about £300 so thats almost 2 months income to me!

Id say best thing to do is store it for university and just buy a few small things.

Shes 15 already I really have been away a while!

Had a natwest "cash card" when I was 13 could use it like a debit card basically, ie internet and chip and pin stores.

Check the sign up offers though, at the time I got free £10 wih £1 or more deposited (only once though ), but some have free radios, organisers etc and other tat to......

Still got the same account now (albeit a debit card, still sod all difference mind)!.

Oh reading above, ie "thats a massive amount", not being funny but each parent makes their own choice, If I could afford to do that then I would, as long as somebody respects the value of money, 500 is a lot but depends if she buys her own clothes etc, it all adds up!

Everyone wants the best for their children, but nobody whats their child to be spoilt, ie longs they don't go "I want, I want gimme this oh and gimme that"..... lol.

about £300!!!??? seriously even when I worked at Tesco when I was 17-18 it was £800+ a month  sounds like you're not working hard enough.

if she puts it in an ISA bond then she can't touch it, that's what I would do

Well I wouldn't want to say for instance "Right you're 18, whole world to explore, get out", but not sure I'd want to save money for their car, the worlds a hard place and you don't get money for nothing and Its a hell of an achievment/award having to save and get your own car, plus you're more likely to look after it as its your hard cash (albeit thats the respect thing again haha!)

Further education wise is different though, as you don't get much money working part time and its difficult to fund some courses etc.

Welcome back Iom-RF, very long time no see :-D

HEY HEY!!! I started a thread some time ago about you, asking if anyone heard from you, cos i missed ya on here!! Lovely to see ya!!

I totally agree 500 is alot but she is such a good, really well behaved, polite girl who has never caused me any problems. Shes respectful and appreciates everything. I could give her 20quid and she would be just as happy but because she is not a wanting or expecting girl, i decided to treat her..

its nice to hear though as it seems to be getting rare, All I seem to see is school kids swearing, shouting/screaming and generally not being respectfull to anyone or anything!

Its great to see you too and what a wally i was for going in the first place haha!

I wasnt being funny either lol.

I respect money too thats why when my loan comes in next week(or earlier) the majority is going to pay off my overdraft and bills.

I meant its massive in that its a lot of money for many people, if you worked a miniumum wage job for 40 hours it would take more than 3 weeks to earn due to tax etc.

Nothing wrong with giving it at all.
