Teenagers' 'mephedrone deaths' not drug related

Found 28th May 2010
Toxicology tests have shown that two teenagers whose deaths were linked to mephedrone had not taken the drug.

Well done for the Government jumping to conclusions and banning without evidence...............losers

Media panic and subsequent government knee jerk reaction turns out to be based on bad information shocker. Still at least we got rid of those idiots, remains to be seen if this lot are any better...

its the fact they could rush it without any real facts or evidence, then apply that ability to other parts of the law, it could well be very concerning

Surely if it has been established it caused one death then it should be … Surely if it has been established it caused one death then it should be banned. Or is your arguement that you need a certain number of deaths before action is taken.

In b4 someone justifies it by saying what about alcohol, or tobacco.TAX.

actually what about taking too much aspirin or paracetamol, think we should have a accelerated banning...........

Media pressure, the intense criticism they'd face if they didn't ban it and another (or first) death occurred.

I can definitely see the concern should precedence be set.

Facts and evidence never troubled that government, nor did knee jerk reactions to media pressure or lining their pockets to create laws just look at the digital economy act :whistling:

Not sure the BBC were really right to make that statement anyway. From their own article:

"John Sterling Smith, had the second-highest concentration of the substance experts had ever recorded, but the inquest at Brighton was told it was "unlikely" that it alone killed him. Pathologist Dr David Wright said Mr Smith had coronary artery disease.Mr Smith, who worked as a a part-time sales assistant, was also HIV positive, suffered from chronic renal disease and high blood pressure and was a diabetic."

true, however without debating the issues in DEA, this story is defnitive that it was wrong to blame the cause of death on a little known legal high, which now has most probably created more interest in other forms of legal highs.................

Reactionary politics whatever next. In my mind drug policy should based on one thing and that is scientific evidence not on idealology, which a lot of people espically in the right wing media (daily mail espically you) base their opinion on.

v2drinkers;8712487

Alcohol and tobacco are not scientifically engineered to create a high … Alcohol and tobacco are not scientifically engineered to create a high this stuff is.

So you're all for the legalisation of cannabis then, that grows naturally, or cocaine that comes from coca leaves or......etc.

So you all feel its alright to take mind altering substances especially … So you all feel its alright to take mind altering substances especially if the have been engineered to get around the law.How many of you would still be alright with this if (and I know it is an if) someone taking this giving themselves a legal high was driving a car and knocked over and killed your son or daughter.

divisive comment, this is about the fact this ban was based on no facts or evidence, in return how would you like a law created to ban something in your life based on no fact whatsoever?

No different to someone drinking and doing the same, that's why drinking and driving is illegal, drinking on it's own however is not. Idiots are all over the place but laws shouldn't be based on them, otherwise well wake up one day up in a world where kitchen knives are banned because someone might get stabbed.

The thing is I don't care what someone else put in their body it is their choice. the car analogy doesn't work as I am imagine it ia illlegal to drive when high on drugs just like it is when you are drunk and should discourage with very harsh penalties. but I bet you don't say lets ban alcohol do to this.

Yes I'm okay with people getting high.

No I'm not okay with people driving whilst high.

I take the similar stance with alcohol.

I dont care why they banned it. what worries me is how popular it was/is with high school children because of how cheap it is and easy to get a hold of, we dont yet know the full impact of taking this 'plant food' yet young kids are taking it, Like it or not you cant watch them all the time

IF adults choose to take this as with alcohol/cigs then thats their choice you cant ban everything, but at least they should know exactly what the long term effects are, although we know the long term effects of smoking and drinking yet alot of people still do one or both, and not to mention the cost to the NHS/taxpayer

I really dont think it was that popular with high school children. Despite what the Daily Mail would lead you to believe it wasn't bought by wee Johnny along with his can of coke and mars bars down the street on a Friday after school. Same with the scare story that thousands of students are 'eyeballing vodka' like its the done thing.

Dirty drug, but almost all of the cases of deaths are when people had been ****** out of their minds and on other drugs, which is what probably bloody killed them

there is so much incorrect info in here i dont know where to start

if wed made ecstacy available in nightclubs with proper awareness and controls we wouldnt be having this cat n mouse game

mephedrone has not been directly responsible for any deaths at all

mephedrone was never "plant food" its a research chemical.......its been around for a few years

the press created this monster by making the average person aware of it

PARACETAMOL KILLS OVER 200 PEOPLE A YEAR

ecstasy has been responsible for how many deaths exactly? not many and those that were are from dehydration and inexperience/mixing drugs

alcohol and tobacco are "scientifically researched"

mephedrone comes from the Khat plant

in america maybe but not here

even when they are proven safe this info is ignored......david nutt and several other members of the drug council are testament to that, sacked and resigned

in fact the banning has technically been enforced incorrectly as the drug council is not at full strength as its missing several members.......if abiding by the misuse of drugs act

the only difference will be, the next big thing will be banned before theres any outcry, probably before it comes into the country, the change wont be piles of it in every supermarket with a gift tag from cameron on it

you realise the drug policies are based on information from drug abuse charities, doctors independant advisors etc, those same ones that worked with labour will work with the conservatives, if change happens it will be a more strict and pre-emptive one.

I dont care if cameron stood up an announced hand on heart he would legalise all drugs, it wont happen, if anything labour are softer than conservatives

Some people do drugs all day.....I do think that some of the banned ones shouldnt be though, as like you said, they are tested more and probably do less harm than however many drinks you have at the weekend.
