Tesco to close 43 stores, and cancels plans for 49 planned stores

I guess their 'take over the world mentality' is over..... I remember when they would offer any deals necessary to get planning permission...

in my town they agreed to do a new bus station at 1.6 million just to build a store!

I said this recently in another thread:

If I remember rightly, Tesco still made huge profits.
So all these draconian actions because they did not make as much profit as previous years.
It's not like they made a loss.

In fact, looking at their financial statement for 2014, they made a pre tax profit of 2.3 billion pounds. Yes, over two billion pounds.
Granted, once you take the tax and so forth it will be less, but will still run into the hundreds of millions.

So, because their huge profit was not as huge as previous years, they are going to lay staff off and take other measures too.
This is an example of the times we live in - unprecedented corporate greed.

yep, staff pension scheme is also being closed, and that was one of their reasons why they only paid 'min wage'

    "Every little helps"...

True in the 1990s, but how long will it be before this is pronounced as "Every Lidl helps"?

Good, bad luck on the stuff but there is a stupid amount of stores.

    Stuff the employees.

Apologies for the blatant cut and paste....but this guy seems to know his stuff.....

"Reduce the yo-yo price changes, Staff do not have time to carry out thousands of price changes per week.

Concentrate on the stock that sells, remove the multiples of the same version product, too much choice creates too much stock to cope with in tiny warehouses.
Part time staff are not as productive as full time staff in the long run, no-one on 12 hour contract is going to care about a department/store as much as a 39hr worker, bring back full time roles in all formats.

Delivery cages are loaded without due care and attention leading to huge waste issues."

good, now the locals can have what they wanted, local shops or will the contrary attitude rear its head as per usual..............

moaned and moaned at not wanting a Tesco now its going they will still moan, no sympathy for them at all

I couldn't care less to be fair

Id of thought the stores that are closing are ones that were never needed anyway not ones that were really busy but shoppers started shopping elsewhere.

This is what happens when you allow big corporations to take advantage of the work fare scheme. So most of the people being laid off, will probably have just been working for their dole anyway.

    It's a tough one isn't it?
Having to balance between allowing free enterprise and allowing social security.
This current government seems to be all out in favour of corporations - regardless of their country of origin - completely at the expense of British people.

Nope .. sorry, not getting it .. my name is gerrymig not Every Little and I've never helped at Tescos.
Actually I tell a lie, I once helped a little old lady struggling to reach the top shelf in the mixed pickles aisle, never got paid for it or put it on my CV though.

Thats what I mean lol and he holds a sign with a big finger pointing to checkouts but its wedged under his armpit so basically someone else is hired to wedge it there 200 times a day

Chatham's an interesting choice as that means theres no 'real' supermarkets in the town just a pokey little Sainsbury and Iceland.

Unless by "in town" you meant right in the town centre, there is ASDA (on Maidstone Road), with a new store planned at "Chatham Waters":

    [ kentonline.co.uk/ken…96/ ]

I was expecting the chatham one to shut as it has been a long time coming. The store is in a bad state of repair and is very run down. Also it is never really busy so was a good choice to shut down.

Yeah in town chavvy my boy Loads out of the town centre but that no help if people don't have transport to get to them. Walderslade Morrisons(?), Asda, Gillingham/Strood Tesco are probably about the same distance from Chavham town centre. So glad I got out of there lol.
