Tesco to Scrap Clubcard Deals!!!!

In a meeting held this morning at New Tesco House in Cheshunt (Tesco Head Office) it has been announced that the Tesco Clubcard Deals scheme may be abolished at the end of April 2009 as it is no longer financially viable.

Tim Mason (Clubcard Director) advised that it would be best not to make any announcement to the public as there may be a sudden rush in deals applications and they would get overwhelmed.

If the plan goes ahead the consumers will still be able to collect points but will only be able to use them instore, therefore missing out on 4x value on Deals. Airmiles would also be cancelled. This has been due to slowly decreasing profits for Tesco PLC.

About 3 months ago we had a meeting about the clubcard scheme and it was decided that we had to drastically reduce the number of extra points promotions in circulation. As a result most online codes become customer specific, the Wine Club no longer gives the extra points coupons and the Food Club has changed extra points into money off coupons.

The next Culbcard statement comes out in Feb so I would advise changing them to deals straight away to avoid dissapointment.

The following people were at the meeting today;
Steve Webb (Investor Relations)
Tim Mason (Clubcard Director)
Terry Leahy (Chief Exec)
Jonathan Lloyd (Secretary)
Ian Naylor (Head of Customer Service)
Richard Brasher (Trading Director)
Andrew Higginson (Strategy Director)
Lucy Neville-Rolfe (Legal Affairs)
Norman Reaney (Site Manager for Cardiff CSC)
Simon Beattie (Press Office)
Someone with curly hair and glasses (IT and Website Design)

This meeting was hush hush and will not be announced to the consumers. The only time you will notice anything is when the Deals website disappears.

This is not for definate going ahead but the chances are very high that it will. You have been warned.

a lot of people are going to feel screwed over when this happens. especially if you've been saving for a holdiday or something expensive.

Nice leak, not gonna effect me but good reading nonetheless.

Only reason I do any (very little tbh) shopping/fill-up at Tesco is to get the clubcard points for the deals - if they scrap the deals that'll be it for me there.

They seem to think that a lot of people will say that but will still continue to shop there as it is what the consumers are used to. We'll soon see what happens I suppose.

We do 90% of the shopping elsewhere...only really go to Tesco to use the points vouchers from the clubcard statements, and if we need anything late at night (as its 24hr).

If the clubcard points go, then I will shop elsewhere. Only go because the points make it worthwhile.

Asda have been cheaper than Tesco for many years now, and its only the clubcard deals that make me stay with them. I think Tesco will see a greater loss of profits if they go ahead with this.

It frustrates me more that they aren't even going to tell the customers in advance. They're the ones that make them their profit and now they're about to get shafted.

Agree. I have just returned to Asda and noticed a big saving.

Me too, I think I will go to ALDI from now on. I have to travel 15miles to Tesco anyway.
Thanks for the info, I shall be cashing in my points v soon.
Anyone know anywhere good to use them in North wales?

I find it hard to believe they actually think in these hard times customers will stick with paying higher prices

I suppose we've been screwing over customers for years now anyway. Why stop now.

Well yeah, I'll give you that. £2 billion profit in a year doesn't come from being nice

I have a sneaking suspicion they wont admit to this

Yes I was at the meeting. The people listed above were the important people there. There was another 11 of us there. Not that we had a say. As for the guy with glasses and curly hair, he is important to the online side of things but he has a stupid name that I keep forgetting.

Didn't Tim Mason go to look after America? Or was that someone else?

Original Poster

Tim Mason has been appointed in charge of the new "Fresh and Easy" stores in the states but he still has a big part in the clubcard system for the time being.
The company is concerned about profits because if this american venture goes tits up then so do Tesco as they have invested so much into it.

Does this mean they will be getting rid of the Clubcard altogether?

I'd imagine not.....the points will just be used for instore use

100 points will only be £1 off in store, rather than £4 in deals

I doubt it, just not giving 4x value anymore.

How much did the company have to contribute to be on the deals list? ie I doubt Tesco gave the full 4x value so was it 50/50?

No the clubcard will stay (for the time being anyway). Only the Deals and Airmiles will be scrapped. With the clubcard vouchers being spent instore it means Tesco are getting back the money they give out so they wont lose so much on that.
With Deals becoming ever more popular, the profits are beginning to take a nose dive.

It varied on each deal. For example Hilton Hotels was a poor one as Tesco had to pay something like 78% of the price whereas alton towers was about 30%.

It would be a shame if you got sacked for leaking.

Well I wasn't the only one at that meeting who was not happy about the course they want to take. Working for this corrupt empire kind of demoralises you anyway. They wouldn't be able to prove who it was anyway.

Fair enough, I always thought it would be a bit of a winner for Tesco, let's say they had to give out an extra penny per pound, it meant that their customers would be more likely to shop there as they'd get 4p per pound. Tesco have the power to make the companys pay for the rest, companies generally want to be on that scheme don't they?

It does mean for those companies they'd only get 50% of the money on for any transactions coming from deals. But it's advertising isn't it and getting people in the door so hopefully they'll come back. They also can't be used with other offers so you usually pay an extra 25% anyway.

I assume you're quite high up? Do you only go in for the pay and don't want to help Tesco?

Not that I particularly want to help Tesco, just wondered if people high up have the same attitude? Considering your pay and shares probably depend on performance whereas mine certainly doesn't!!

I wont say too much apart from I'm in marketing.
I did enjoy the job when I started but the longer you're here the more corrupt you realise it is. Granted other supermarkets may be the same. The pay is fairly good probably about the same as a store manager for one of the extras. Good benefits and that but its just **** the way things are done.

This isn't espionage. Its just leaking info. Isn't espionage when you work for a company to deliberatly bring it down. At least I hope I'm right.
Although it is in my contract that I cant give out "company sensitive information". Oh well.

Just found out the one of my colleagues has leaked the info to Clodagh Hartley, a journalist at the Sun.
