Texans coming together to help reach out for those in distress

Lots of mutual community help in Texas during their disaster.

The catastrophic flooding in southeast Texas from now-Tropical Storm Harvey is grim, but amidst the disaster, there's also some good news.

Across the state, Texans are helping Texans. The Galveston County Daily News reported that 15 people were evacuated from a nursing home in Dickinson, Texas. This morning, a picture showing residents sitting in water got attention after Timothy McIntosh shared it on Twitter. McIntosh told The Daily News, the nursing home is owned by his mother-in-law, who sent the photo to McIntosh's wife early Sunday morning.

"She said it was a disaster and they were hoping the national guard would come," Kimberly McIntosh, Timothy's wife, told the paper.

Requests have gone out in many communities asking for volunteers with boats to help in answering rescue calls. A lot of Texans are responding, but some of that help is coming from across state lines with Louisiana's Cajun Navy.

In Baton Rouge, The Advocate reported that some Louisianans had started planning to deliver supplies once roads opened up, while others headed out with their boats for Dickinson, Texas to assist with rescue efforts.

Toney Wade, a commander for the volunteer group Cajun Coast Search and Rescue, was among those headed to Texas to help with relief efforts. Wade told The Advocate the group helped with rescue efforts last August in Baton Rouge and would take what they learned from that flood scenario to Texas.

He noted that the group is going in with rescues in mind, but that they are capable and prepared to help recover people who don't survive. As The Advocate noted, this is not the first time the two states have worked with each other after a natural disaster.

Helping anybody is not mutually exclusive.

To quote Lord Baelish:

"Sometimes when I try to understand a person's motives I play a little game. I assume the worst. What's the worst reason they could possibly have for saying what they say and doing what they do. Then I ask myself how well does that reason explain what they say and what they do."

I await Dave's unfavourable comparison with whichever group are the true target of his post.

They knew it was coming but after Hurricane Rita about 12 years ago there was no mass evacuation ordered because it caused more issues. Many people won't leave their homes and last night the emergency services were telling people not to go into their attic second floor but no further. Boats jet skies and tipper trucks rescuing people. There was a fact in the tv today when Katrina hit they ordered mass evacuation and a few hundred thousand people couldn't go anywhere as they didn't have a car and there isn't a public transport system. But all will be ok tomorrow Trump will be there.
honestly surprised they didn't resort to shooting at the clouds

Stupid country, pretty much everywhere else would have a load of coaches on call, take Cuba for example they pretty much nail everything down or cut\take everything that could be a hazard in a hurricane, they evacuate everyone to shelters or the most study private houses. And they ain't got any money.

America just leaves people to rot isnt it about time they voted for a government that cares instead of one that fleeces them for taxes while hiding behind their founding fathers principals as an excuse to leave people to rot.

Very funny fiction. Wonder why Cubans move to USA but not the other way round.

Btw if Texas were a country then its economy would rank about 10th in the world.

Calling America as a whole stupid is really quite bizarre given rule of law and standard of living in USA. They look after their poor better than their peer superpowers for certain with a truckload more freedom than you would find in Cuba!

Thank you for completely missing the point perhaps this may help you, and your comments about them looked after their poor better is laughable don't beat about the bush whom are these other superpowers you are citing? India perhaps or somewhere along those lines they certainly can not be compared to the western world.

Cuba makes it very hard to emigrate there. I would have thought you would be supportive of that.

Probably something due to being banned from travelling there let along living for about the past 50 years or so.

Standard of living can be great in America but only if you are on the good side of it, no where else in the world has such disparity between rich and poor.

Little to no welfare support and no health care, wouldn't really class these as contributing to a high living standard overall.

I'd much rather move to Cuba than America!

Of course Cuba would welcome Americans to defect whilst Cubans enter USA in large numbers.

I agree because they get food as basic ration that they can top up with bought items, they get a roof over their heads, they get the best medical care at the point of service that the government can afford to supply.

My mother's been to Cuba she came back going on about they have 24\7 dentistry, we don't have that, my mother found that out when one of her crowns or fillings or something like that fell out and her mouth wouldn't stop bleeding, she kept having to go to A&E were they kept trying to stitch it up until she finally managed to get an "emergency" appointment at a dentist (which is probably why she kept going on about that specifically when she got back from her trip to Cuba)

dear oh dear coek...you've scored an own goal their bro, perhaps look up totalitarian regime - UK is not an example!

en.wikipedia.org/wik…mes

A totalitarian government is a single-party dictatorship that controls all aspects of public and private life. Citizens do not enjoy individual rights such as freedom of expression or assembly. Totalitarian governments usually promote extreme nationalism and employ brutal tactics to silence critics. Not only are residents subject to censorship, but information flow into the country including via the Internet is also severely restricted. Totalitarian government control is not limited to politics but also extends over social, cultural, economic and private aspects of life, as well as the media.

Totalitarian government by proxy, they are controlled by the rich, for the rich and those self same rich rule the media and thus control the people and the government.

We don't have the right to expression as such as you are well aware we don't have free speech in this country, technically we don't have the right to assembly either in terms of protesting without telling the police a minimum of 6 days in advance of your planned protest. They do attempt to silence criticism and stop justice (what happened to the paedophile investigation)
They want to control the internet, they watch everything we do on CCTV, they register us on countless databases etc.

Yes fine its a lighter version for now but we are getting worse, they are getting more bold in their arrogance as they are allowed to strip away more and more rights and control more and more, slippery slope without the benefits of communism (roof over head, basic food provided by the state and work etc)
Is this supposed to be a news article on hukd?

Write, Publish or March for what you like excluding support for terrorism = Totalitarian government by proxy?

Oh dear its sad if you feel that's too restrictive a lifestyle for you and is akin to a totalitarian regime, we are utterly spoilt for freedom compared to Cuba or North Korea?

Citing the most extreme cases is not a valid argument against our erosion of rights and social security is it. Where do your comparisons end? Its ok everyone our arms industry doesn't sell as many weapons to those despots as that other country so its ok to continue to do so while pointing fingers at that other country.
