The Best Media Centre - Ever (*NOW Only £139.99 - I'm chuffed)

I wanted to share this with ya, because i think some of ya may be interested in this.

I've had various types of media centres for a while, pretty much all of them i've been dissapointed with to a degree. My xbox with XBMC coming closest to what i wanted.

Finally - few months ago what i wanted became a reality :).

The Acer Revo (A Nettop):

ebuyer.com/pro…153

With an ION GPU, 270 Atom CPU and 1GB of RAM for £149.99 inc delivery..

What is incredible though, is it can run not only 720p without any problems.. But also 1080p.. Which i find astonishing. Nvidia ION really is impressive.

youtube.com/wat…leE (Nice video here showing 1080p performance)

It's as easy as buying it.. Whack XBMC Live on it (You boot from a USB Stick, installs a light version of linux and XBMC).. Then away to you, boots up and goes straight into XBMC.

Of course you have to do a couple of tweaks to get perfect performance, change shared memory with CPU in BIOS.. Add a couple of lines to a file to get the right hsync, vsync and modelines for your TV etc.. But thats about it.

I bought a Microsoft MCE Remote for it for £10 second hand.. You can easily add another 1GB of RAM if you wanna put Windows 7 on it as a dual boot, that way you get better performance in windows.. I'm running 1GB on mine atm and it's perfect on XBMC, i do have an extra 1GB coming though so Windows 7 is snappy

I can't just believe the performance to price point.. £149.99.. I'm godsmacked and so far chuffed to bits with my new media centre :).

so does xmbc find the pictures for the movies/programs youve got?

ive never used it, it looks really slick though, i just use my ps3 for my files but HD rips i copy on my usb pen drive and then dump them onto the ps3 HDD

I was looking at something very similar (might even have been this one) in PCW for £229 last week.

It was not knowing how it would handle MKV etc, that made me think it wasn't worth it. So it plays these files fine with no judder of glitches? I'm surprised if it does tbh.

So example is on my setup.. You add a source..

One of mine being C:\MEDIA\Movies (This is on my main PC, u can search over ya network for it).

Then you goto the settings of that source, just tell it that it's a movies folder for the library... Providing all of ya movies of named correctly, ie: "The Matrix.avi" and not "Tha M4trix.avi". It will automatically download all the cover and thumbnail art to your revo.

I was shocked it did it to.. But basically providing you have it set to use GPU accelrated video (This is just in the normal settings of XBMC) and you set the shared memory for the GPU in the bios. . It uses the ION to run any video files..

I watched a 1080p film without one single frame drop, it really is that good.

If you check the youtube video in my post - it shows the acer revo playing a 1080p sample file. Which is a screen from Planet Earth, very very high biterate 1080p file.. Runs perfectly :).

A bluray rip I downloaded the other day (its just a film - about 9GB in size) wont play on my lappy. I thought you needed at least a 2.6GHz C2D to play these without graphic acceleration? My Lappy is a 1.6GHz with a 3100 (I think) graphics card. Doesnt get anywhere near playing it!

Yeah it's a testiment to how good an Nvidia ION GPU is, it basically takes over all the grunt of running the 1080p mkv.. Leaving the CPU to play with itself.

I just think it's mental something with 1GB RAM runs 1080p this good. The GPU really does all the work here for video.

Yeah 1080p rips i have are 8.7GB - 9GB.

www.xbmc.org - this has been around on Xobx for ages but the latest bits now make the xbox struggle a bit especially with the new skins.
But still the best Media Center around and ye sit downloads all the artwork for Movies and TV Shows automatically.

I was looking at getting this one and using XBMC Live - just got more disk and bot more power in it - and hook it up to the back of the tele

Yeah XBMC has been going for donkeys years.

It's only recently though that the Nvidia ION drivers and the XBMC Live installation have married together to the point where 1080p plays without dropping a single framerate, XBMC devs added a few options which really improve things.

XBMC Live - you download the installation (ISO).. Either create a bootable USB stick or use an external CD drive to boot off it, then it's just a simple installation. Installs a lightweight version of linux in the background and XBMC on top, so whenever you turn it on it's straight into XBMC :).

Media wise i just put all my sources are stuff on my main PC over the network, u could use a USB external HDD or even the HDD within the Revo to house ya stuff.

The keyboard cable is average length.. Guess you could use a USB extension cable ye.. I personally bought a Microsoft MCE Remote, u dont need a keyboard at all within XBMC.

Yeah i bought the Microsoft MCE Remote with it's reciever for £10 second hand, you can normally pick them up for £10-15 either around these parts or on ebay. Na i don't need line of sight on mine.

Equally other remotes will work, such as the Cyberlink. You just have the copy over the remotes profile to the Revo is all, although i believe the Cyberlink will work out of the box now like Microsoft MCE Remote.

Na it doesn't have bluetooth..

People either buy the Acer Revo or the ASRock for XBMC, seems like theyre the most reliable.

The ASRock comes with a remote and inbuilt reciever (also bluray drive), but bare in mind its slightly higher spec and costs at least £300+ for that. Plus won't play 1080p any better than the lower spec'd Revo, as they both have the same GPU.

Agreed, I use a Revo and XBMC and its fantastic, definately the best media solution available for free

Errr.. Think you've got things muddled..

Any online 1080p h.264 rips are standardized in a way, always coming out to around 8.7-9GB. Don't think i've ever seen a 30-40GB rip online lol, unless it's uncompressed.. Which no one brothers putting up, because well.. There would be no point lol.

Here's how far off the mark you are..

Planet Earth - 8 Episodes.. 1080p x264.. Comes to a total of 30GB, for an entire boxset lol. Between 3-5GB per episode.

Btw 1080p x264 = FULL HD

Then again proof that'll it'll play that uncompressed is.. You can hook up an external bluray player to the Acer Revo and it'll run blurays without framerate drop, you can get a custom ION based XBMC live installation off the forum.. Has all the tweaks put in already, which allows bluray via a external bluray drive.

Then again Acer demo'd the Revo at CES, running Windows 7 and an external bluray drive running through it. So it's not suprising that XBMC got the functionality added.

3d tvs arent even out yet (nearly) and surely if you were paying all that money for a new set, you wouldnt comprimise your first 3d experience on it by watching a '3d rip' lmao when you could pay 15/20 quid for the bluey

Spritey say a file is name "the matrix *enter the person who rips it here lol* (2008).divx or whatever, will it still find the artwork for the film? or does it simply have to be "the matrix.divx"

Yerp, same for music aswell :).

It'll have to be something like..

"The Matrix.NAME OF PERSON WHO RIPPED IT.avi"

or

"The Matrix - NAME OF PERSON WHO RIPPED IT.avi"

Things like that, XBMC wiki has a list of all acceptable formats for what they call "scraping"

Guess feature i like - add the BBC iplayer plugin.

Can watch BBC iPlayer from ya TV, great little GUI for it to.. Much better than PS3 hehe.

You will find however that most online release groups structure their filenames, so they're scrap friendly anyway now :). Esp when it comes to TV episodes.

actually a lot ofpeople do rip uncompressed blu-ray movies with the full hd audio and want that to playback fine over a network.

I use a WDTV downstairs which is great, but i love my xbmc upstairs. I might look into this, what's the startup time like?

I've never understood why someone doesn't make a box like a WDTV and run XBMC on it, the software is amazing.

I've only just got mine to 'scrape' properly since switching skins (cheers Spritey) and it's brilliant. It even takes the episodes of TV shows i have and downloads the synopsis, lists it as the episode name rather than s2ep01 or whatever. Looks brilliant on my 26" LCD too.

If i did something like you've done Spritey could i attach an external hard drive and access it over the network, like i do atm with the WDTV?

Incredibley rare... Not to mention that streaming would never be spot on with a file of that size.. Sure, people will do there own rips for personal use.. You won't find one release group online actually doing that. Because there really is little point with x264.

Yerp.. Options with XBMC Live on the Revo are pretty much all the options you can think of.

1) Put movies / content on it's own HDD and use
2) Attach a external USB drive to the Revo and use
3) Use your own PC and share the movies / content over the network
4) Use a NAS and access it from the XBMC

Even stream stuff from applications like Tversity.. Altho no reason to, because sharing a folder works perfectly fine.

And if you connect an external HDD to the Acer Revo, you can share it through XBMC to the network.. You access the XBMC on Acer Revo as you would any windows PC going to the network.

etc etc..

Boxee is good.. But i prefer xbmc.. Boxee needs to mature a little bit yet in my opinion, although heavily linked to XBMC.. I do think boxee will eventually overtake XBMC.

I like the WDTV thing, it's handy.. I do think however things like this are far superior, both with better GUI.. More options.. And also.. But more importantly, this is a PC aswell. So just whack on Windows 7 as a partition and bada boom, surf the web and gubbins from ya TV.

ok i'm seriously tempted to get this. use my WDTV to play 720 (sometimes 1080) HD bluray rips, 6-9gb. AVIs and mkv's ripped from my DVD collection. I transfer the stuff from my PC over the network to the hard drive attached to the WDTV. The WDTV is connected to my sony amp via optical (my amp doesn't have HDMI)

a. would i still be able to do this with the revo/xbmc?

b. what would be the benefit? only the interface i presume

Yerp you could do this, just connect up the external HDD to the Revo.. Share it with XBMC, then transfer over... Simple :). But then u could just stream it from ya PC, save the fuss of transfering hehe.. So just put the USB External HDD on ya main PC (less clutter by the TV), then share ya media folder off that to the XBMC. It's what i do.. I have 1TB external hooked upto my PC.

Benefit is mostly GUI ye, all the lovely art and info. Also the fact you can use it as a PC.
