Been done a million times before but thought I'd get another general book thread on the go.

If you can post your pile of books to read or your book collections.

Any recommendations, anything to avoid etc.

Even children's books welcome for those who read them to their kids or to themselves...

So anybody read any of the above? Should I ditch any of them?

Been out of reading for a couple of years really other than the odd book here and there. Read many a textbook mind

Just reading the second part of the Millennium trilogy then on to the last then it's one of the books from the pile.

millenium trilogy is excellent-so is let the right one in(americans are about to murder the film with a remake)-dan brown lost symbol is terrible imho.

just read "is that it"-geldofs autobiography(quite good) and about to start "live fire" by stephen leather.

mrs barky is reading "room" by emma donohoue-loosely inspired by the josef fritzl case-looks quite good so will read it once she has completed.

I'm in the middle of the Lost Symbol,i had to persevere with it at the beginning as it's hard going, but so far not too bad !

Can't say I'm looking forward to The Lost Symbol but I've read his others and they're easy reading if a little samey. I'll save that one for last.

Let the right one in was the best movie of last year by a mile. I'm not sure about the remake, it is of course unnecessary but it has some pedigree and it looks similar in tone to the original so no Hollywoodising.

I do have some bios to read too but I can't really read them end to end. They make good toilet reading to be honest.

Last book i read was the wealth of nations, but that was more for uni stuff rather than enjoyment, I suppose my most recent read then would be Catcher in the rye, its my fav book and i read it every year

dont have any to read atm though, might buy a good one when the student loan kicks in.

I've been raiding the charity shops and ebay/amazon lately and paying between a quid and two quid a book. If you have a charity shop in an affluent area then the quality of books can be excellent.

Never say never. When does copyright run out on it?

I just had to say love your Avatar..He's a semi- aquatic egg laying mammal of action!!!
Anyway, have you read any Matthew Reilly? As with most action/adventure you have to suspend your belief at times but fast paced action.his series featuring Scarecrow are quite enjoyable.

Might check him out, where do I start with him?

Ice Station is the first Scarecrow story or try Contest or Temple. I recently got a couple from Sainsbury's two stories in a book for £2.

    Anything interesting?

I'm always on the look out for cheap books so I have a lot more than on my picture to wade through but they'll probably sit on the shelf for years untouched.

I'm reading My S**t Life So Far by Frankie Boyle. Bit disappointed its not as close to the cuff as his stand up shows though

Probably something you would read, is a very varied pile of books. I have been stopping myself from buying books for months, sooooooooooo difficult though. Currently got 3 books in my basket on book people that I am trying to stop myself buying!

Will watch them all as soon as I've finished the books. Don't like to let someone else's vision (the movie director/makers) influence my imagining of the characters and situations.

Puts me in a difficult situation with the US remake as it is being made by possibly the greatest Director of the past 15 years. He will undoubtedly do it justice. After reading the book I can see elements of Zodiac in it.

all depends if you can wait for the entire trilogy tho m8-once you have read the books,I think you will find that the original movies depict the characters accurately-will be interesting to see what the yanks do with it and whether it is high box office material.

all 3 originals have already played in scandanavia and they have also shown extended cuts on tv-we are miles behind!

I will watch and report back this weekend or next. Was it you who watched the first one and told me how the home made subs were?

    Nice pile.

Heard good things about Under the Dome so will be getting that at some point.

Read a few Tony Parson novels when they first came out but they got samey (can say that about anyone I guess).

Was reading about James Patterson and how he manages to 'write' so many books. Seems he gets people to write books for him then he goes over them before publishing. It's been subject to debate just how much he does rewrite in them. His books are ridiculously easy to read though.

Yeah, I liked under the dome, read it crazy quick as I really got into it. I've not read any tony parson yet, recommendations on which one to start with?

I started the Patterson one in the pic (first one I'd ever picked up) the morning before I went on holiday thinking I would get a couple of chapters in, read it all in a couple of hours.

Yea, I did some googling after I finished it and saw how many he'd released was shocked, then saw, as you say, he doesn't actually write them.

Have you read any Mike Gayle? I really like them

Not read any of his. Using the thread as a shopping list for when I go get some more books so I'll check him out.

I would probably start with Man and Boy for an introduction to Tony Parson. His books are very much the male equivalent of chick-lit though.

From your pile I have read The Shadow of the Wind and loved it! One of my favourite books. I read his second book The Angels Game but it was nowhere near as good. I also have The Lost Symbol in my 'to be read' list but having read Dan Browns older books in quick succession I'm having a rest from his books as it all gets a bit 'samey' haha.

I am currently reading Eat Pray Love by Elizabeth Gilbert but its a bit too preachy and not really my thing.
I'm also reading The Innocent by Harlan Coben which seems good so far. I have a HUGE pile of his books to read. Going to read the stand-alone books then read the Myron Bolitar series if anyones interested lol.
Other books TBR are: The Collaborator- Gerald Seymour, The Savage Garden- Mark Mills, Phillapa Gregorys new book as I liked most of her others.

Cool, Mike Gayle is very similar. "the to-do list" is non fiction and one of my favourites, all are very good though, apart from "life and soul of the party" (in my picture) which was ok, but not his best

Hollywood may but with Fincher at the helm I think it will be a very good adaptation.

Anyone know any good places for large book cases? It looks like I'm resorting to a few Billy cases from Ikea but open to somewhere else that would deliver too. Need to fill a space of about 240cm wide. The Billy units cost just under £200 for that sort of coverage. Preferably over 2m high too.

Ok finally watched The Girl With the Dragon's Tattoo and it was abysmal. I know movie adaptations rarely live up to the source novels but this was a really bad example. They got it horribly horribly wrong.

Talking of bad movie adaptations I watched the lovely bones last night. I wasn't a massive fan of the book, but the movie wasn't good at all

With you on that one. Jackson butchered the book there. Casting Marky Mark in a role requiring acting was also a huge mistake.

And cutting a couple of major story points out

Casting Marky Mark in anything that requires facial expressions is a mistake.

I've got a big pile of nerd books to chew through. Currently finishing 'Judas Unchained' by Peter F. Hamilton and will be starting 'Turn Coat' by Jim Butcher soon.
