    The end of the world...

    Banned
    ... is nigh.

Well, it seems to be anyway.

First off, I'm an atheist whom believes in nothing more than nature - stuff I can see, smell and read about in science journals. All the rest is simply folklore and bull.

BUT! I was bored a couple of weeks ago so I watched a program on Anytime that was about the 2012 mayan prophecy. It's kinda weird.

The mayan calendar stops on the 21st of December 2012, but there have been several ages of man that have also come to an end according to their writings.

What I was interested in was the fact that they have a document suggesting a great flood will be the end of the world in 2012.

What with the recent Japanese earthquake and the fact that these events (resulting in Tsunamis) are happening more often, it is certainly something to think about.

The recent Tsunami looks like it killed around 10,000 but coupled with the economic wave across the world that it causes, it's a lot more that just a list of the dead.
Major manufacturing plants closing down, resulting in spares and parts being hard to find has had a result on my business in the past two days.

I'm concerned. Be interesting to hear other viewpoints.

I don't want to think about it

Probably best to be honest. After watching the new Brian Cox show on Sundays, I'm really beginning to think we are nothing more than sand grains in a huge desert.

    I'm gonna sign on tomorrow.

I'm the same, a devout atheist & uber skeptic but even my spidey senses have been tingling of late. I don't buy into the whole Mayan calendar thing at all but the possibility of a shift in the magnetic poles and the possible flooding caused by the ice caps melting lot faster than expected is quite worrying.

I read somewhere once that there is an island on the outside of spain/portugal where if it collapses which it is doing there would be tsunami which will wipe out the majority of the south of england.... TBH didn't the mayan predict there was going to be a massive war in 1939... I do believe in this rubbish even though i do not want to

I didn't buy in to all the conspiracies about films such as "the day after tomorrow," "2012,"Volcano", etc etc being public service warnings but now I ain't so sure and I am kinda glad I watched them no matter how dire they were because now I kinda know how to survive.oO

I also know how to survive zombie/vampire/ghost and mutated weirdness's attacks, which is a bit of a bonus.:p

Of course not - I'm as sceptical as they come. I just think the big increase in earthquakes, that result in tsunamis, that result in economic shutdown probably gives us something to think about.

The fact that a civilisation that started 2600BC hinted at the fact that this would happen now is quote interesting.

    That's all.

It certainly concerns me, though not in relation to the Mayan calendar. The scale of disasters really seems to have increased recently. Some say it's that they're more widely reported, I don't know.

Only way to survive is to own a dog (they never die), have a love interest in another town (they never die). Certainly don't be black or Hispanic (they always die)

Difficult to do when society demands so much of you. I think a different life plan is in order here!

At least we wont be here when the Universe dies, Brian Cox said that the other night with a creepy smile on his face (I think thats just the way his face is though, unfortunate really) I think he knows more than he's telling us..........

Although, I quite liked D:Ream, I would much rather he was back in the group than telling me the end of the world is (not really anytime soon) upon us.

I met them once in a hotel randomly.

Its fate, its GOT to be, I just wiki'd him and his stepson's name is the same as my old dog's, I reckon that coupled with the facts I just passed on about my life means I am gonna live forever, I am much happier now than I was on Sunday when he broke the news that the Universe was gonna die out in x amounts of trillions of years.

We are all doomed, I'd like to say you heard it from me first but that has to be given to the Mayan's ( probably ancestors of mine ).

An ark is useless by the way, at first their will be waves, Japan's tsunami is nothing compared too the ones that are coming, You might survive them but when the Earth cracks open in the middle of the Pacific, 90% of the Earth's water will be sucked into the Earth's core, Essentially cooling the Earth's core and will effect the climate, At first the temperature will be at least 30 degree's at the poles and reaching a massive 200 degrees at the equator, Of coarse the water will eventually be evaporated from the core along with million's of ton's of sulphur creating sulphuric acid clouds which essentially will lead to acid rain. Along with super volcano's erupting all over the world.

All that happening in a very short period of time with only a very small population of people surviving, All resources will be perished and cannibalism will take over.

Another few years will pass, Then a rouge stray planet ( planet x ) will collide with the Earth obliterating 50% of the Earth and sending it with a one way ticket out of the grasp of the Sun and becoming a rouge planet itself, Of coarse by this time nothing remains or survives.

This rouge planet sounds a bit gay.

"document suggesting" - does that not fit in the catagory of folklore and bull?

    JonnyTwoToes

    Yes. HERE

lol the only reason they appear to be happening more often is that now we have the technology to record them. even that highly dubious link states,

"it is worth noting that our ability to record all earthquakes of 7.0 or above occurring across the planet prior to 1901 is uncertain, and so there is likely to be some incomplete data in the 19th century, because of this. It was only in 1897 that a global network of seismographs was deployed."

so just over a hundred years ago we couldn't really measure when where or how strong earthquakes occurred accurately and therefore we had no real idea about the size or frequenecy they occurred. As technology gets better and our ability to accurately record and report earthquakes improves worldwide it wouldn't be hard to assume the amount of quakes we actually collect data from increases.

I wouldn't confuse that with an actual increase in the numbers no matter what the mentalists tell you.

    Proof of planet x

I had this very same conversation with my friends the other day!

I DO believe there will be more natural disasters and ecological catastrophies but I don't believe that is going to destroy the world... I think humans will do that all by themselves. After all the floods, volcanoes, earthquakes, hurricanes, tornados and storms batter us, there will be shortages of food, land and fuel which will lead to civil unrest and wars will start. Initially, small ones but as other countries step in and state their allegiences, the wars will get bigger until full scale warfare will virtually be the end of man... Or maybe I have an over active imagination and 20 years from now, we'll still be writing c*** on shopping forums!

If the internet had been around in the first half of the 20th century then people would have beenon shopping sites preditcing the end of the world then as well. Millions killed in two world wars, the threat of nuclear warfare hanging over man for decades; if the world got through that I reckon we can cope with what is being thown at us now too.

This cbc.ca/new…tml doesn't suggest to me that anything is happening now that hasn't been happening for at least the last hundred or so years. And prior to this detailed records are impossible to get so who knows how many millions more have died in natural disasters.

    You should have read on:

For example, between 1986 and 1996 (incl), a period of 11 years, there were "just" 15 earthquakes listed by USGS of magnitude 7.0 or greater. This is not markedly different (albeit a slight decrease) from previous (similar periods) of 20th century, where an average of about 18 might be expected.

But between 1997 and 2007 (incl), a period of only 11 years, there were 99 earthquakes with magnitude 7.0 or greater : This is more than a six-fold increase on the previous similar period - and is a stark increase on any earlier decades in 20th century too.

The trends in nature here, particularly from 1997 support the wider realisation of prophesy about the "End Times", namely that an increase in earthquake activity is a pre-requisite for the "second coming of Jesus Christ" foretold in the bible. It does not indicate how close we are to this event, but suggests it is not too far away.

Considering the Earth is more than 4 billion years old, isn't a sample of 10 years a little on the insignificant side?

So are you saying next year I shouldn't pay my car insurance in one lump but spread the payments over 12 months in case I can't drive after December 2012? Lucky we didn't get the 2018 World Cup now, Russia aint half going to look silly when nobody turns up!

How significant the rise is probably more down to individual perception.
All I'm saying is, the after effects of such a strong earthquake are not only of a physical nature due to the global economic status of how we all 'live'.
You must be aware of global stock markets taking a plunge?

In my opinion, it's something that can't be ignored.
