The EU has decided the cost of texting home (from the EU) will drop to 9p max from 1st July.

Its going to put Virgin Mobile on the spot, given they are charging 12p for national texts!

Mobile phone users will be able to send text messages from abroad for just 9p this summer under changes to European rules.

The cost of Britons texting home from other parts of Europe is to be reduced by around 60 per cent from this summer.

The European Parliament has approved legislation which sets a maximum charge of 9p a message for a UK customer.

Rates while roaming in the EU can currently be as high as 41p, despite a study suggesting the true cost to the industry is around 3p a text.

MEPs in Strasbourg approved new rules which require mobile phone operators to provide clearer information on the cost of surfing the internet and downloading data when abroad.

Customers will receive a reminder when they have spent 50 euros (£44) using the services while abroad.

The move comes after cases where mobile users racked up bills running into thousands of pounds through downloading films to watch on their small screens.

Two years ago the EU introduced moves which more than halved the cost of making a phone call abroad from Europe.

The new rules for texts will come into force on July 1, in time for the main holiday season.

Caroline Flint, Europe Minister, said: "As a mum I know parents will be especially pleased that there will be absolutely no excuse for the kids not to keep in touch when travelling in Europe this summer."

The new rues were first mooted last summer with concerns over disparities across the EU with Latvian mobile phone users charged 4p per text compared to up to 41p for Britons.

Fiona Hall, Liberal Democrat MEP, believes the need for legislation reflected resistance by mobile operators to voluntary cuts.

    ROTFLMFAO:w00t::w00t:

Perhaps operators will just stop you roaming now?!

It's about time they introduced this, as the profit margin is huge and even at the lower prices, it's still a hefty profit margin, so it'll promote more people to use it at the new price.

I hope they can introduce this around the world, as not everyone wants to remain within europe on there holidays.

No that was your reading difficulties in a post discussing xenophonia.

All I did was post the discussion to see peoples views did not mean I was advocation any side - and only corrected posts that were objective and incorrect. Less sharp people failed to understand this.

Just as with this post - it was not me who planned the drop in texting prices - I was just looking for comments. Can you understand it this time?

If there is anything else you don't understand - by all means post again, expressing a need for help to have it explained to you.

Errrrm.....ok......I don't think that was the intention......it's more likely to keep families contacting each other, as I for one try not to take many calls while I'm abroad, costing a pound per minute just to accept a call.

Hopefully that'll be the next step.

Which VOIP company did you use?

I installed the software for running VOIP on my mobile last weekend - but never took it further as the software the mobile company supplied came bundled with about 16 Jamster packages that they entirely forgot to mention. :x

If your phone can use data - you might be cheaper running an applet to send web based texts.

I put a Virgin freebie £5 sim in mine which offered a meg of data - and got two weeks texting out of it (plus the 5ish pence the web text people charge).

I did this to but I send too many texts I guess lol

Last time we were away my best friend was calling me and telling me how her 17 yr old daughter had been contacting her biological father without telling her... she was hopping mad and deeply upset and it took me several phone calls and texts to keep her on an even keel ( she's not long ago had a miscarriage so bad timing for her all this ) and to speak to my friends daughter ( who is also my god-daughter ) and as I was there the same day her parents broke up she can talk to me about these things easier than she can speak to her Mum...

Anyway.. I think I'm dropping Virgin lol

    A typo is a typo.

A typo becomes funny when its in a line claiming a dictionary is not needed - or when they are trying to claim something does not make sense - but has an error it in those few words making that allegation.

Clearly it's your own reading abilities in need of assistance. I never claimed I didn't need a dictionary to assist with spelling. You suggested I looked up the meaning of a word (which I had no need to do.) But if it makes you feel good to regurgitate about 25 times, then go for it.

I have to say i do find it amusing that someone who complains about phone deals and racism can conjur up the word "xenophonia" and feel its just a simple typo not worth a mention, yet a minor typo needs to be reposted by you in each reply. Irony!

Well I took your advice and used a dictionary for definition usage of "huff". Unfortunately there was no description to suggest "huff" means "enjoying taking the pee. Sorry, you fail.

I doubt I have used "huff" more than a dozen times in over 3000 posts. Although that thread really fueled tantrums from the prima donnas.

I think you are exaggerating saying I pointed out your error 25 times. Perhaps you need help with numbers too? :-D
