Sim Only FAQs

What is a Sim Only Deal?

A Sim only deal offers you a package of minutes, texts and mobile data for a monthly cost, similar to a mobile phone contract. You don't get a handset however, just the Sim card!

How long am i tied into a contract for?

This depends on the contract itself, but you can normally expect it to either be monthly or 12 /24 monthly.

Will the new Sim work with my existing phone?

Provided you have a phone made within the past 5-8 years, you should be fine. Most networks supply a sim card which can be used in almost all phones.

Can I keep my number?

You sure can! Just text 'PAC' to 65075 using your current sim. Give the supplied code to your new provider, and the switch should happen within 1 business day.

Can I cap my spending?

Of course! If you want to limit your spend over the included allowance of your contract, most networks allow this. We have a handy thread here explaining the steps.

Where can I check coverage?

Check coverage with Three HERE (http://www.three.co.uk/Discover/Network/Coverage)
(Use Three for iD Mobile, PG Mobile, TPO Mobile...)

Check coverage with o2 HERE (http://www.o2.co.uk/coveragechecker)
(Use o2 for Giffgaff, Tesco Mobile, Lyca Mobile...)

Check coverage with EE HERE (http://ee.co.uk/why-ee/network/mobile-coverage)
(use EE for ASDA Mobile, BT Mobile, Virgin Mobile, Life Mobile, Vectone Mobile...)

Check coverage with Vodafone HERE (https://www.vodafone.co.uk/explore/network/uk-coverage-map/)
(use Vodafone for Talk Mobile, TalkTalk Mobile...)

Ofcom checker HERE (http://maps.ofcom.org.uk/check-coverage) (checks ALL major networks)

Would totally recommend VOXI £10 for 8GB, £15 for 20GB offer currently on.

I was on 3 but sick of no signal in Central London (particularly the city near Broadgate Circle, but to be honest the majority of London from what I experienced) and poor call quality. Moved to VOXI this week and already my mother commented on how much clearer I sound, and I got internet signal in the city!!!! Amazing!!

Same here, asked that a while ago, also you can gift data to people on the same plan, so if you don’t use all your data, give it to other family members/friends under the same account

I'm at the end of my Vodafone contract. I want to buy a new Vodafone contract through Fonehouse. Any advice on how to keep my number? I a told I can't just move it to the new contract. Any help greatly appreciated!

However brought one sim free prior so can do simo this time.I would like the Vodafone £14 effective one, however is there anyway to port my number to the new contract? Or will I have to move it to another network then onto this sim?

Will need another network as PAC codes dont work if going from and to the same network. I did this with a free asda mobile sim as no top up required to do the whole thing!

You will need to switch your number to another network first. Order a PAYG SIM, e.g. Three will deliver one to you for free quite quickly. Get your Vodafone PAC code, transfer to Three, wait a day or so for it to go through, then request PAC code from Three and transfer it to the new Vodafone contract.
Left three this week. Was on a legacy £14 a month unlimited everything sim only without RPI increase but was getting too slow and congested. I moved over to bt family sim with my Wife. 2xsims 100gb each £20 a month. Three had started going downhill and I started noticing it more and more. The EE network is a lot more consistent in 4g signal. I’ve disabled volte though and have 4g on volte off and the 2g network comes in handy where as before I’d lose the call. Very happy with the move and speeds. (Up to 60mbs). Fast enough for what I need on a phone.

Watch out with Vodafone when doing this type of things as they don't always clear the old contracts from your credit file. Not sure if this affects you much, but i just discovered that on my credit file i have 4 live vodafone contracts
Vodafone CS is bad when it comes to sort this type of things.

For Vodafone I suggest contacting CS and getting them to make the current line PAYG - then they can can switch the number to the new contract/sim.

No am with three. Can’t wait to leave them. I just done a web chat and said am with Vodafone and think about leaving them etc. Make sure you say you say your debating between three and EE. Then they will offer it. I tried to get it for £20 they won’t have it. Good luck

Might consider it. Moved from EE to Plusnet as contract finished and with Black Friday close thought it would be better to wait. Thanks.
20GB £16ish here - that is already plenty for my use. Do run a billmonitor report to see how much data you actually use
Just a quick word of warning re: Fonehouse, I did the Voda 4GB unlimited calls/texts for £4-odd effective with cashback. The Vodafone app shows only 1GB and Fonehouse CS via email claim "you will receive an addition 3gb" but no sign of it yet.

Have been using Voxi for few months and i recommend it. Had no hassle with it as yet.
JustAPye30/10/2019 09:20

Just started with voxi, my signal keeps dropping to 3g in a lot of places even though coverage shows strong 4g signal in my area so I'm holding on for a nice black Friday deal to change, ee/bt have been the best in network speed I find.
PlusNet uses EE network along with Virgin - so you will get a much better network than on Three (always awful) and the likes of GiffGaff and Tesco on O2 network.

PlusNet also offer 1 month contracts at the SAME PRICE as their 12 month contracts. So you can easily and happily get 1 month contracts for a great price. Just check the plusnet site for them.
Got a call from EE as I called them yesterday. They offered me 100gb and unlimited everything else with BT sports and Apple Music for £21. I took it. It’s worth calling them and wait for them to call you back. They offered me £22.50 yesterday on web chat and today £21.00. Am happy with that deal. Can’t wait to leave three. SIM card coming tomorrow

Plusnet does use EE but according to multiple posts on their customer forums it doesn't have access to the 800 MHz band (the infamous band 20). This means signal strength indoors may suffer.
Can definitely confirm that my indoor signal is crap, have to leave phone by the window, plus they do not allow wifi calling.I have played around with settings on my phone and enabled Volte and that seems to have improved reception a little or maybe its just that all the trees at the back of the house are losing their leaves

Well I suppose it is better than they had, but are falling behind. GiffGaff and Voxi had 6GB for £10, Voxi has just upped to 8GB as a black friday deal. Plusnet are doing 9GB (o 11GB if you are a BB customer with them) for £10. None of those are 12 month deals, which I expect Tesco to be, in which case you has 8GB for £9 on 3, 10GB for £10 on Virgin
I'm thinking about Virgin one, three refused to match their own Quidco equalant deal for me after i took pac code so moving away
Question is if i mention im a virgin customer would it risk my cashback from quidco of £25?
