Facetime is not a feature I'll use much, however, for fairness:

3's video calling was absolute crap. It looked crap in the adverts, and was worse in reality.

Facetime does at least work.

if the op had checked the 1st reports it show its very impressive and looks like a winner for iphone 4 owners

yep spot on, I remember using the video calling thing on my old k800i once for the lulz (there wasn't any) and the little camera on the front was never ever used again.

Yes.

Over 3g it'll be crap - like it was 7 years ago.

Look I ain't gonna use it - I've used it today, and its cool, but "meh". However, over wifi, it does provide working, usable video calls. Which is a first in my opinion.

Theres no reason why it would be crap over HSDPA. Pretty fast connection that is ya'know.

Don't forget the iphoney video calls can only work over WiFi. Lols

I'm pretty certain it could easily do it over 3g, but I'm not surprised you're on an anti-apple trip again.

I remember a time when dcx on rare occasions talked sense. Now it doesn't matter what the topic, you can be certain his post will be plain wrong every single time.

I wouldn't say facetime is a revolution - however..

The way facetime is implemented is fantastic - and thats what makes it.. No the fact it can video call (as u say, we've had it for donkeys years) - but the way that video calling has been implemented.

Once my wife has my iPhone 4 (if i upgrade to iPhone 5 in 12 months).. I can imagine when im away on work, we'd video call all the time.. Plus so i could see my son.

What?! that is video calling, what's so good about 'the way it's been implemented'?

Have you ever tried to video call? I have.. On my Nokia N95.. Just a horrible experience, unreliable.

Where i can be on a call, then if i'm on wifi just hit 1 button and within 2-5 seconds to a full blow video chat.. Allowing me to also flip cameras at a touch of the button.. The entire experience and implementation is what makes it so good..

I'm NOT saying it's revolutionary, i am saying that if video calling is to take off one day (and it will eventually).. It's stuff like this which is going to push it that way.. Not "Well i get skype, i sign up for an account.. add my friend.. then we both have to be on skype.. call him.."... It just feels more convient and simple on the iPhone.

I'm hoping Android work with Skype or do something to implement video calling in this kinda way

So you just don't like the expensive stuff....fair dos.

I can't say I'm surprised Apple disabled Facetime over 3g. Makes sense for now.

I'm guessing we have the usual people who don't like the iPhone spending way too much time telling the world about it.

All that effort because you don't like something

It has nothing else going for it that can be used in an argument, and I can quite happily afford multiple iPhones, I just have a tendency to not buy crap.

Anyone can max out a credit card to buy a phone - I'm talking about comfortably affording one.

Also, saying the iPhone has nothing going for it is just being silly, even for you. Even if 'I like the way it looks' it your reason, one hardly needs to justify it to anyone except themselves.

I just have to laugh when someone tries to belittle with claims "I can afford to buy a mobile phone". Seriously, it's hillarious. If you're going to do that, at least make it for something worthwhile.

It's an OK phone. Can't be much fairer than that........ But it's ridicuously over priced and is bought mostly as some sort of status symbol. That's even funnier.

I'm quite happy with my new arrival today... and my iPhone can be put into retirement where it deserves to be.

Guv, what you need to understand is that I am not just a god on this internet shopping forum, but I am a god amongst my friends. If they saw me with a 3GS today, I would be a laughing stock. I had no choice but to buy the iPhone 4 as it backs up my claims that *I* am the status symbol people should follow.

That's fair enough - you probably don't make the type of purchases that require credit card protection, thus lending weight to my original supposition.

The problem Apple has is with AT&T, especially in places like New York. Maybe when they open it up to other networks they'll enable 3g facetime.

Point i'm making is facetime wasn't first. Fring even allows you to use a phone without a front facing camera. Can the 3gs use facetime if it is running ios4 (genuine question I dont know the answer)

Also, there's no at&t in the uk so why no 3g facetime here?

I can't see Apple enabling features like Facetime over 3g in some markets and not in others - it would be extremely damaging for AT&T.

Err why would apple care? I think the real problem is that the app is not robust enough to run/downscale over 3g.

It's a different region anyway. The evo can do 4g on the sprint network but not on other networks so they released it on sprint. Htc sells it's product, that's what htc is concerned with.

I doubt apple gives a flying **** about at&t

htc desire

And you're trying to make yourself feel better for not being able to get an iPhone?

Why? The Desire is a very nice phone - don't let the iPhone make you think any less of it. You should be happy; some people can't afford even the simplest phone, and you have a perfectly decent one.

Hat's off to apple in my opinion, getting people to queue round the block and convincing themselves it's cutting edge is the sort of thinga lot of companies would sweat blood for.

As a consumer if you're happy with it and the social status it brings then great all round...

Those of us that don't get it will be getting together to read the emperors new clothes over video conferencing with our backwards, flash enabled, mobiles...

I like how the most expensive phones on the general market are normally the ones that shatter if you drop them.

If I had an iPhone when I owned my James Bond Edition Sony E K800i it would of been smashed within a month, that phone is actually invincible, and it still works, dropped it 1000 times from bloody high heights, left out in the rain for 3 days and it still worked, it did damage the battery as charge lasted for 4 hours or so, but after about a month the battery then fixed itself, now I own the James Bond C902 and again a solid phone, will last forever tbh.

Also it was one of the first colour screen phones out, just wanted to get that in there before someone claims apple invented colour screens.

Apple invented the Universe, everyone knows Steve Jobs is our real God.

It even has him in a Window down the road from me, so it must be fact.

I think the implementation is poor as it's very basic particularly with its extremely limited compatibility only supporting other Iphone 4's - my current phone (N900) supports video calling over both Skype and Google to other computers or phones on either 3G or wifi which I think is a much more powerful and useful implementation.
