The state of UK education is getting worse!

First of all, this is by no means an attack on students but the state of the education system of the UK, so good luck to all taking exams at this time!

The state of this country's education is a mess. Years of dumbing down, the UK has now slipped from in the top 10 of the world education rankings to the high 20's (out of 65 countries).

If that wasn't shocking enough, a pupil from the high school told me yesterday that the headmaster has made it COMPULSORY to resit every exam, even the ones who got A results, to bump up the figures (as they can swat up on the questions that they struggled with in the first exam). This is, in my opinion, borderline cheating.

I honestly believe if this was to carry on and if the people in charge don't take their heads out of the sand, stop sitting on denial and make some big changes we, as a nation, will be left behind as a third world country...

That is dumbing down - there were loads more countries in my day.

I am shaking my fist at my LCD screen in outrage.

Let's face it, our country is rubbish.

what you mean education getting worse? we gone up from 10 to 20 pff

On the bright side, they'll be more jobs around for the older generation as the plebs leaving schools today won't be getting them.

it is a sad state to be in but i think alcohol plays a part in this as well, lots of people to busy binge drinking and focusing less on exams, careers etc.

We've always had RE lessons though otherwise I'd have blamed them too. Maybe it's the lack of RE being taught now?

wat u tawkin bout we iz vell clever bruv X)

to be honest its true, universities tend not to teach certain subject areas as they say its "too difficult" or takeds p too much time to explain it to the students. i personally blame the government due to their "targets". Teaching along with medical care is made up too much beaurocratic crap that they have litel time to spend on the student/patient.

I spend atleast 3 hours per week on my students and I dont even teach them, i only supervise.

All grammar and spelling mistakes are intentional and have been left in to highlight the crappy state of the british educational system.

if we are totally honest and i really hate to say this, but its sex! there is so much more sex around that children grow up much quicker although not maturing at the same rate. Sex in something that has become more part of society. while they should be learning about core subjects like english, maths and science. they end up going to college and university and studying perfoming arts, drama and sociology.

Get a real degree and contribute to society, we used to be a nation with the greatest scientists in the world, but all we have left now is half a Hawkins and Brian Cox

OP, link to article please?

Complete BS @ the resitting exams.

Whenever I've took a resit it's never been the same questions as the previous exam. Similar topics maybe but not identical questions.

Maybe not identical questions but you must be at an unfair advantage if you even know the gist of the questioning. I was also lead to believe that, as this girl was a A student, if she got a lower grade in the resit the higher grade will stand. To me it takes away the point of having a sitting exam. Isn't it bad enough already when you can get most of your grades from course work and STILL get a high grade without even bothering turning up for your written test? What's more, the majority of the students from the school seem to be going to sixth form to study PE and only a tiny few are going on to core subjects. Shocking.

Students sit the previous years exams anyway in preparation so not going to be much better off resitting.

I was advanced a year when I was at school - because I'm THAT awesome (true story). Even those I was put in a class with were less educated than my cat.

You're right. After failing my history GCSE I retook it but this time I focused my revision on the past.

I had been revising quadratic equations and John Steinbeck for months, so imagine my surprise when I was asked about the factors leading to the Second World War.

Does this include Scotland?
Can we see the link, cos im guessing it doesnt

GCSE exams are far easier now than the old GCE's ever were. Employers must have a nightmare what with most CV's having prospective employees all holding 10+ GCSE 'passes'.

Mmm, university places and degrees in what ever subject you like, handed out like sweeties these days.

In my day a science degree required a certain level of intellectual excellence - and included some rock hard maths.

Coursework is being phased out in favour of controlled assessments, which pupils complete under exam conditions.

I think that is the most stupidist thing the government can do. this now means the teachers will be feeding then the answers in a round about way an they scoring good marks although it's not their true mark. The coursework gives the student the ability to research his/her answer and explain it in their own understanding. Seems this government is grooming the next generation of fools.

Don't be daft, anyone who has done an ounce of prep will have looked at past papers that are freely available to all, so all should no the gist of questioning.

I remember Maths A Level modules we essentially knew there would be 4 questions, worth 25 marks each, on 4 set areas.
