What does she mean by saying something is gay?

It depends on context.

Agreed

I assume she means it's crap or pathetic it's hard to know, being female … I assume she means it's crap or pathetic it's hard to know, being female she's always complaining about nothing

Corrected for you.

Entirely about the context, just as black isn't offensive as a word on its own. To call something 'gay' in a negative context (ie this xxx is gay, that xxx is gay etc) is in general offensive (particularly to homosexuals and those who associate with gay being a good thing) as it brings a negative association to something being gay.

so are u offended......like JB says....its a kid word so to me its not offensive ..... doesnt make one homophobic does it

No doubt her friends also use the word, and she'll grow out of it soon enough.

It's slightly more worrying when grown adults use the word.

Try teaching her some of the far more eloquant and less divisive words that exist that fit the purpose better...

When you use 'gay' to mean something is bad then you're essentially saying that being gay has a negative connotation to it.

It's not too hard to see how that could be offensive to a decent person.

jellybaby22

Hmmm I'll give it a go but who's going to teach MB not to use it X)

MB is a lost cause in this matter... she will go on using it till the day she dies.....how gay is that lol:D

Personally, no, but that is pretty much irrelevant; there is lots that is offensive, to some grossly offensive, that doesn't bother me. But as a yes\no answer it has to be yes, it is offensive, and understandably why. (Take as an example a schoolchild who is having concerns about their own sexuality; you must see why being in an environment where anything negative is 'gay' must result in complex physchological issues for one who believes they may be homosexual).

Rather than offending me though, its just a pretty poor use of language; surely as adults here we can find more suitable (and less divisive?) words to describe things that stretch beyond 3 letters?

These arguments relating to "just having a laugh etc" are simply a re-run 50 years on of the some of the arguments faced by anti-racists.

People need to remember that when they use these terms they are lining up with those that see homosexuality an abomination or disease and seek either intellectually or physically to eradicate it.

Personally I'd rather not see it here, perhaps in certain threads but I just don't think it sets a very good impression for a 'family friendly' forum, and, if it becomes commonplace, it might start straying into personal comments, which would certainly be unacceptable; that said there is, as mentioned, far more offensive stuff that frequently gets mentioned and condoned...

When I was at school many kids used black in exactly the same context as gay is used now. That trend, has, I hope, somewhat died-out, as people have become more aware and educated to the negative connotations. I agree its widely used by kids, and pathetic and lame, but I don't think that in results in it being barely offensive...

What ever happend to the word 'Gay' meaning happy, does it always have to mean someones sexual prefrance?

Not really offensive but I suppose in some instance it can behttp://www.bartonccc.net/sports/trackfield/tf0708/photos0708/Olympics2008/08USTrials/TysonGay977.jpg
