The European Union has taken a big step forward in achieving digital unity by announcing that from June 15 of this year mobile roaming charges within the EU will cease to exist.

The plan to rid EU mobile users of the burden of roaming charges has been in the works for more than two years but the EU Commission has had some significant barriers to overcome in order to make it happen.

The biggest problem it faced was opposition from operators who were worried about the effect such a move would have on price regulation when their customers are using other networks while roaming.

Andrus Ansip , Vice-President for the EU's Digital Single Market said now the “the last piece of the puzzle” had been solved.

Now that a way to regulate prices has been agreed in a way that won’t stop operators being able to provide competitive prices in their home markets, the plan can go ahead.

That means as of June 15 this year (just in time for your summer holiday) if you’re travelling in the EU you’ll be able to use your phone exactly as you do at home with regards to texts, calls, and even internet access.

Despite the current Brexit discussions, this deal will still apply to UK residents as EU law is still in effect. It's not clear yet how the UK leaving the union will impact the deal, though some networks such as Three already offer customers free roaming in several countries.

Before this deal can come into effect the European Parliament and the Council have to vote on it but with support coming from all corners this is now seen to be little more than a formality.

Need a sim for your holidays? Why not check out our Sim only megathread? (Shameless plug, I know.)

Roaming charges discontinued with trade negotiations from the collapse of the EU 2019

I would imagine that this will only apply to contracts taken out after the date.

What if i go on holiday in term time? Will I have to pay then?

Bloody dictators saving us money on our phone bills!

If only people who voted remain could benefit from this!

And then after the collapse of the EU those Remoaners have to pay premium prices whilst Brexit voters enjoy the trade negotiations agreed with each country

And then after the collapse of the EU

More likely that the UK collapses with no single market access.

I voted remain, however you seem to be the one moaning, how does that work?

Technically, this legislation still needs to be confirmed by the full European Parliament and all member states, so it's not really official, yet.

About time!

Pity we are leaving... divide and despair seems to be the flavour of the times right now.

Vodafone & Three do this in the EU

With Vodafone it's only on contracts taken out after a certain date.

3 only do free roaming on advanced plans the essential plans don't have 'feel at home' it works out cheaper to buy a payg sim and use that while your away.

As soon as we're out of the EU the companies will revert to type and charge us again knowing full well that UK Govt will do nothing to step in because they need big businesses to support and fund them.

We wont get this as we will be out of EU. I am pretty certain of that.

Thats great i go on holiday on June 13th

Or am I just responding to moaning anti-Brexit comments?
Get over it
We all had a chance to vote
The vote went for Brexit
Vox populi
Stop with the negativity and you won't be open for criticism

So why respond to me? I wasn't moaning just stating a fact. I admit it was negative but it is what it is.

No.

Re coming out of the EU. It will be negotiated along side every other law.

It still baffles me how people don't understand how this breakup works.

From June you have the ability to roam at no extra charge - until you are told otherwise. Enjoy it.

And this is a perfect example with what is currently wrong with the EU. This should have been in place years ago. People should have been able to use there phones in the EU at no extra change for the past 20 years. Why has it taken soooo long? Cos the EU is an ****.

I've never moaned about the referendum result so you can't criticise me, unless you're just making it up.

No they don't. It's an add-on you need to pay for.

You stated I was the only one moaning as a Brexiter

Comment #3 Is a negative statement towards Brexit Yes or No? and if Yes must be by a Remoaner

but you only find my comment as negative

So yes I can blame you as much as I can blame Shengis

Just because we will be out of the EU, you all do realise we are still part of Europe?
We were still in Europe before the EU was set up.

Well, it depends whether you consider Europe to be only the mainland or whether you also include the islands. "Europe" is a geographical term and is subject to much debate, not unlike the "British Isles".

Which is a shame, I was hoping to drift south towards the equator.

A 20GB plan which costs how much per month? It's not free to any EE account.
