Think I found a wasps nest, looks dead.... HELP!!!

Found 23rd Aug 2008
Just pulled out our "push in" electric fire place and wood bit and I think I've found what looks like a old/dead wasps nest.

Normally I wouldnt consider myself a coward but when it comes to Wasps/Bees I am.
Over the summer we did see quite a few Wasps/Bees around the house every few days when we come home there would be one around.
Looked up our local council and they dont deal with "Wasps" so guessing I'm going to have to speak to some company.
Ideally would want this issue checked and dealt with and also our attic.

Guessing someone can do this? Any help or advice?

I know, I spent 15 minutes lightly shooing one out the house the other day, the only reason I did was because I didnt want to leave the dog at home with him,

I should add I pulled the fireplace out before the Summer and it wasn't there then.

there is a spray you can get - looks a bit like no nails - cant remember the name (i ve got some in garden shed but not going out there now - sorry) i will look in morning to get the name of it - someone on here will know - should be able to get it from b + q etc

ill check back in morning

looks dead from pic - just be careful though:thumbsup:

Sorry i'm tired, rentokill maybe.

Or www.yell.com pest control.

Not much you can do if you are unsure if it's a live nest (live nest can hold about 5,000 wasps)or not, Just block it up if you can and call in the experts.

Strange that your council doenst have a department for this.

Dont go out of your way to kill any if you can as they release a chemical which attracts more (like calling the cavalry)

Have you used the fire since you last pulled the fire out?

It looks dead, more like a bees nest.
Is there a flue in that opening?
It looks more like it has fallen down the flue, rather than having been built there...Perhaps the heat from the fire, or other fireplace has killed them, and it's melted and dropped down the chimney/flue.

Also if there's no obvious wasps or bees there, then just scoop it all up, and deposit it all in a polythene bag. Job done.

Its not a proper fire, one of those Electric jobs which push into the old place.

Not sure where it goes (moved in a year ago) but think it is a proper chimley which would work.

What time of the year should the nest die? Could be a bee nest I normally just run a mile

I would also check that the flue is`nt blocked before you replace or use the fire...

Bees nests don't die, wasps die in the autumn, only the queen survives, and goes elsewhere to overwinter.

If it was a live nest you would know it by now.
Just clear it up.

Thanks for your help RockyFella, think it was a Wasps one and that its dead.

Still liking the idea of getting someone in who can check the 'chimley' i.e. look up it and see if they would also have a look at the attic at the same time!
Such a whip when it comes to bees and wasps

Also thinking it might have fell off the wall (the black mark?)

crow bare in mind was nests dont die wasps frequently come back to nest in a few years. SO kill it quick and be on the lookout for it returning.

PS I HATE WASPS/BEES nasty little ****ers

I have had 2 bits of advice - 1) leave alone, they die off in winter then just leave as is and 2) when they die off in winter remove the nest or they come back - not sure which is best so I keep out the loft and hope the cover doesn't come open ......
