    Thinking of getting Peugeot 308......

    Hey all.... Need some advice!

At the mo I have a 2001 ford focus, 1.6, petrol. Unfortunately it's dying so after a new car.

Someone at work (a nurse) is selling their 2007 Peugeot 308 S HDi 150k miles, diesel with full service history and receipts. I've got her down to £700.

I'm in 2 mins what to do. I've never owned a diesel before so unsure if it's worth taking the plunge, though the car is a good price, my insurance will rise by £118 a year.

Just after some advice on the car or diesels. Don't know what to do!

150k is a lot, even on a diesel, not to say it wont carry on for another 30k though provided it has been well maintained. is that the original turbo? has the timing belt been done at the required interval?

    I'm seeing it tomorrow.

She said the cam belt was done last year and she has a full service history from the Peugeot dealer

Still sounds expensive to me. 150k miles on French components...

My advice is if she's a friend don't do it anyway, if something goes wrong you'll be pi**ed off with her, maybe unfairly, but we can't help it.

really depends on ur mileage and yes the Peugeot quite costly at mot times

When the car is in gear can you still spin the gearstick round in a circle? Honestly don't buy it. 150k is a lot of miles. HDI engines can do 200k tho easy. But it's everything else you would have to worry about

Avoid. Mileage too high imho x

She's not a friend. We have a staff forum on the intranet at work and I saw it on there.

I did think it was quite high but was a bit more reassured by the fact she has a full services history with receipts. Pics I've seen of the car look really tidy.

I have a 206 1.4 diesel 2003. 155,000 miles runs spot on new timing belt about 10,000 miles ago. get about 50 mpg. don't see the point getting rid £30 a year tax.

If it been looked after there is no reason why it won't continue on. I'm guessing it is due an MOT in the next month which is why they have decided to get shot of it.
If she will let you take it for an MOT and it passes your unlikely to get anything better or newer for the cash.

S model doesn't have many features its the poverty spec but if your ok with that then i woouldn't worry too much

this, really. if its obviously been well looked after and it gets an MOT, no reason not to for this sort of price to be honest

    gov.uk/che…ory

Check it's mot history here if you find out the reg. it's free. Will clarify mileage and you can see what it's failed on etc

    What's a sill....

Might be if doors bent back and dented body work?

I wouldn't buy it. I loved the old style focus. Had 3 of them. Like the ride better than my 13 plate focus.
Rv02 kte I got rid of this soon after 25th April 2013 because of excessive emissions and it ended up back on road. I don't trust that it wasn't put back on road with a dodgy MOT. I had a new exhaust put on it when I first got it.

Same as on a house, the beam that runs under the doors.

At £700 I'd go for it. At that price everything is going to have it's imperfections, and 150k miles on a peugeot diesel is a lot more minor that many other things.

    So confused haha

I've owned a few Peugeot cars.. For the mileage wouldn't pay more than £500 plus most times its failed its MOT. I would recommend a Honda Civic for that price range

Yes I would agree with this but u still haven't told us what mileage u do under about 10k and it's not worth it get petrol instead less hassle and headache if anything goes wrong as with lower mileage the dpf filters start give problems or engine management light comes on. also it seem car has been in a accident at some point doesn't matter too much but u could get the price mocked down abit more by point out the dent on the sill as u know this looking at mot and take it on a high speed test to see if it doesn't wobble at high speed due to this sometimes if the accident repaired car hasn't been done very well they judder at high speeds.

Where do you pick up less than 10 year old civics for £700 from?

Think of it this way. If it fails it's MOT in Oct and you chuck it on Gumtree for £250 and get £200 for it it will have cost you £500 for 8 months. That's £15 a week. What does £15 a week get you?

Some front end damage from hitting a small deer.
I think I'd pass on that one.
Realistically your talking double the budget for something decent.

The thing is at £700 getting something that's works well is the priority over what is best. If it works and is useable then he might as well get it.

I wouldn't touch another Peugeot after I bought an 18 month old 306. Spent 2k on repairs in 2 years. Body made of tin foil. Wheel Bearings wear out quickly. Snapped a locking wheel stud off with my bare hands taking the wheel off. Required a new hub and bearing. Electrical issues with speedo and dash. Two sets of rubber bushes. Brake discs made of monkey metal. Warped. Cracked alloy.
Went straight back to fords. Reliable cheap to fix. Just a bit more expensive to insure. I'd stick to the Fords.
