Campaigners are demanding the BBC apologise after Top Gear presenters Jeremy Clarkson and James May appeared to flout the smoking ban on the show.

The pair lit up pipes containing herbal tobacco during the news section of Monday's show.

Waverley Borough Council said it was investigating the incident which took place at Dunsfold Aerodrome, Surrey, where Top Gear was being filmed.

All three presenters pulled out pipes during a discussion about Porsche-branded products.

Richard Hammond decided not to light up.

After putting the wrong end in his mouth and burning his tongue, Clarkson, 47, was seen running from the stage.

The BBC said it received just a couple of complaints from viewers.

A spokeswoman said: "During an item in last night's Top Gear, making fun of car merchandise, the presenters lit up branded pipes, which contained herbal tobacco.

"We are very upfront about the style and tone of the show, so viewers know what to expect.

"There were no complaints from members of the audience present during the filming."

She wouldn't comment on whether or not what took place was illegal.

But Amanda Sandford, spokeswoman for Action on Smoking on Health (Ash), said: "Smoking in a studio is illegal. Anything that causes smoke is prohibited.

"We would hope that programme-makers make some form of apology. It was meant to be a fairly light-hearted part of the programme, but the law is the law and it's not appropriate for the BBC, especially for a programme that's very popular and seen by a lot of young people, to be openly flouting the law."

A Waverley Borough Council spokesperson said officers haven't yet viewed the footage and are investigating.

I wondered why it was censored as i remembered that episode wasnt censored before. PC gone mad!!

someone also wrote to the police to complain that clarkson was seen on the show overtaking jamey may and his wheel clipped the double white line about 3 inches before it finished.

lol

some people are complete losers to complain abou this. however. i think top gear went out of their way to go over the top with the censorship. As a joke like. Top gear is being ruined by these people.

If it bothered them that much why watch Top Gear. They are never politically correct, thank god!!!

Nooo!! You've got it all wrong.

What's this episode? It's a "best of" episode. And what's the show? Top Gear.

The fact that it's blurred out and says "censored" at the bottom like that is just Top Gear taking the mickey out of the whole situation. If it really bothered them then they wouldn't have included that section at all. :-D

Don't see why people are banging on about political correctness. The issue was the no smoking laws that came into effect 1st July 1997, the original smoking TG episode was broadcast on 14th October 2007 and they were smoking in their workplace. Unfortunately they left themselves open on this one. Shame on those that complained though, bet they don't complain about smoking in big budget movies :x

I suppose the next step will be banning all car chases from films as they show people speeding which is also against the law........

Yep, they were getting their own back in a rather sarcastic way:lol:

Love it x

I think they were also meant to have been drinking too. They are making a TV series and having fun. Its part of the shows draw.

I think the police were in the last series anyway. I doubt it would look good for the police if they prosecuted them for road traffic offences relating to a show 2-3 weeks earlier they were in. Perhaps a quiet word to the producer and a few behind the scene tickets for next season. :whistling:
