Those 2 elasticy rope type things that cross roads. What are they? I must pass 5 or 6 of them in the mile to my work every morning, they have just appeared recentley. They seem to be attached to a unmarked box at the side of the road. Anyone know what I'm on about or know what they are?

    Traffic counters?
Lol normally a sign of forthcoming roadwords or carnage

Thats what I thought originally, but they seem very close to each other with no junctions. So unless they are investigating vanishing cars I can't see the point.

    Aliens.

lol, does sound like they have been badly placed, but they'll have their reasons

either traffic counters to measure how much traffic comes through the area or they use them to calculate average speed by distance travelled.....

    they are speed counters

set up a metre apart so the difference between first and second contacts show the speed you're travelling at

they are used at places where the council are considering speed abatement measures. such as traffic calming, chicanes, speed bumps - that sort of thing.

Thats a bit daft as the wheelbase on a transit is different to say a corsa, so the results would be pretty useless  Maybe that's why cameras appear in the stupid places they do.

It will just be going on 1 set of wheels.

    Good call

What happens if something has an uneven number of axles though? For example an artic can run on 4 or 5.

They count thousands of cars a day, they just take an average. As someone pointed out they are potential cash cow sites for the council to further screw the motorist.

I've never seen a speed camera outside a school and I doubt I ever will, same with police speed traps. Always positioned in areas where they are likely to catch motorists doing 35MPH and never in areas where people could be killed. Kerching..

I thought they were there to monitor speed. Normally once these disappear coppers appear with their speed guns hiding behind bushes??

Speed monitors, they measure the time between each line to track your speed. You will be getting a speed camera put up soon in that spot. They also can count axles, so can check how many HGV's/buses use that route.

A recent study past a school using one of these, at 8.30 to 9am during school dropping off times, in a 30mph zone, found that only 30% of drivers maintained the 30mph speed limit or less. 32% were clocked at between 35mph and 45mph! this is past a school remember. 13% of drivers were clocked at between 45mph and 55mph, but remarkably 6% of drivers, in a half hour period, were found in a 30mph speed limit to be exceeding 65mph!!!

thanks for putting that bloody Phil Collins song in my head now :x

    :-D

Whereabouts have they put the ones in your area? Over here, the council's just had a couple fitted around here-ish

    http://i32.tinypic.com/28kmqso.jpg

I think the idea is tha the corner there is a potential goldmine for catching speeders, since no-one can see around it, and although you can't make it out from the picture, it's actually quite a steep hill, so some drivers absolutely fly down it. Speed + blind corner does tend to make it quite an unsafe part of town, so I do hope a camera does get set up.

nothing to do with axels.....they are set up a set distance apart and when the front wheels hit the first it triggers a counter until the front wheels hit the second counter then the speed is worked out

you get automatic speeding tickets in australia like this......maybe distance of 1km or something

but are used here for other uses
