Thousands of low paid workers are set to receive back pay after an investigation found that employers had been paying them below minimum wage.

About £2 million will be handed to more than 13,000 people, with Argos singled out as the worst offender.

Government investigators found that 233 employers in total had deprived staff of a full wage.

‘Today’s naming round identifies a record £2 million of back pay for workers and sends the clear message to employers that the Government will come down hard on those who break the law. Common errors made by employers in this round included deducting money from pay packets to pay for uniforms, failure to account for overtime hours, and wrongly paying apprentice rates to workers.’

Argos, which was bought by Sainsbury’s last year, had failed to pay £1.5 million to 12,176 workers, the government said.

But Sainsbury’s said the amount was actually £2.4 million for 37,000 people, including former staff.

The article isn't quite clear here. Are the workers receiving only the backpay that was owed to them, or are they receiving an actual compensatory payment?
good news, darn Brexit!
Argos staff were already paid this back in Feb/March, so is this saying they missed staff out? They didn't pay staff correctly again? or It only involves different companies but they just wanted to mention Argos again because of how much they got wrong last time?
it works out about £68 per employee involved as they were not paid for1st 15 mins at work
£2 million for 13,000 , for say, one year, that is £3 per week per person. That's how big and small businesses executives treat people with "contempt" for their workers' meagre lifestyles...squeezing the wage packets which are already miniscule. Did any of these managers through payroll actually overpaid their workers by 1p that HMRC found?! No?!
