    Time off work.... Help!

    Hi,
My girlfriend is currently 18 and in her final year of college, and hoping to get into university. She works in a supermarket clothing department at the weekends, and 3 evenings a week, those are her contracted hours. She has many exams in January and beginning of February, but has no holiday left at work. So she has asked her manager politely if she can have some time off (unpaid obviously) to make it to some revision sessions, the manager said no, so she asked if she was able to swap shifts with people, the manager said no and she finally asked if she could have the evenings off the night before her exams, and guess what, the manager said no!

Now I think this is totally unreasonable, after all, it's working 6-9 in a clothing department during the week, not going to be the end of the world surely!

I was just wondering what people thought her options were? (besides quitting as she has to be completely independent financially to pay for all her outgoings)

Thanks for any help, and sorry about the rant! =)

    she has a contract right?

You say she has no holiday left. Could she not have kept some back or were her holidays dictated by her workplace?

check the laws and legal rights employees have. Should have thought about holidays around exam periods to taking them.

Go over the managers head and write to head office and explain her situation....but be aware that this route could cause repercussions later on if the manager has egg on his face.

thats what i think she should do, because it is her department manager saying no, i think she should speak to a superior manager within the store.

I think that should be the absolute LAST resort. But a resort none the less

    only 3 hours work...do it

    only 3 hours work...do it

Plus any commuting to and from.

Guess you never did any exams never mind pass any.

Quit she signed contract and used holidays knowing exams were coming her own fault really many others would love a job without dictating terms

Its all about opportunity cost. In A2 last thing to do would be to get a job, with the amount of work and the subjects I am doing.

It must be the managers fault for not reminding her when she took the days off and for forcing her to sign a contract she had no intention of keeping.

I think the OP should take the manager to an employment tribunal.

OP, Total schoolboy error( in this case schoolgirl error) asking in the 1st place, should of gone on the sick.!

Let me guess, you are studying Economics, or maybe Business. And you obviously must have parents who are able to support you through college, unlike her.

most supermarkets allow their staff to take study breaks and afaik its not in thier best interests to obstruct this baring in mind most offer graduate schemes also. I think it may be a case of that particular manager being inflexible but to be fair to him/her regardless of all holidays having been used up I would have expected her to have addressed this way before now, as early as November even. I would advise her to go to speak to personnel, some companies will actively encourage unpaid time off in January as business drops off and its a payroll cost reduction that benefits the store. I would not recommend going off sick if its not genuine, it will be noted and there's nothing worse than working with people that have time of sick and are not being genuine, it will not gain her any respect, good luck.

She can't work 9 hours a week and revise for a few exams?? She is in big trouble when she enter the big world. She had a holiday allowance, I imagine she didn't complain when she took it? Typical people blaming the employer can't people take responsibility for themselves.

Tell me op. Why do you think she should be given the time off?

could she not make up the time from other areas of her life? less socialising (if she does) getting up earlier, going to bed later? I cant see where 9 hours in the week cant be recouped elsewhere.

which supermarket does she work for? i know tesco let you have unpaid leave for exam revision and you speak to personnel manager about it, would have thought a few places offered something like this for students

OP Would it not have been wiser if she had claimed EMA than getting a job if she couldn't handle it?

She can handle it the rest of the year, and she knows that she should have saved some holiday for it, but she hasn't so those who are saying this aren't actually helping. EMA, what you think £30 a week can pay for food, bus pass/petrol (at the current prices especially) college trips, college equipment, the list is endless.

Thank-you to everyone that has actually offered some form of advice and help!

Do guys go to a private college?

3 hours? she cant work for 3 hours and still revise? seriously what else does she do? this country is going down the pan with that kind of attitude.

If she works in a supermarket ask about flexible working most of those supermarkets we know offer such a scheme infact Asda also give you 8 weeks off unpaid as already mentioned if the manager is being unreasonable then best advice would be to contact the general store manager and failing that head office is the next step.

Is your girlfriend really ugly? most girls just bat their eye lids and the manager says yes. Though guessing by the reference to clothing department it's a battle axe woman jealous of your girlfriends good looks and/or education.
