I've come to the conculsion that taking a credit card to the USA would be better than taking £800 worth of cash - thing is I only applied for the card on the 7th and I'm flying on the 23rd - Does anyone know the waiting time on these things?

I've gone for the HSBC one seen as I'm already a customer.

Cheers.

Have you applied and been accepted or is it a postal application.
If you have been accepted you should get a card within 7 working days (usually)

mmm might be tight.
Give them a call and explain situation, they may hurry along for you..
Guess you still have 10 working days before you go but it would be nice to have it in good time before you go

should be quicker than average as you already have an account with them, along as you've held the account for a number of years have taken out various loans and paid them back, never gone overdrawn etc then you should sail through.

best credit card to take abroad is from Nationwide BS as they don't charge for overseas transactions, other credit cards charge 2.5-3%.

and not just that, often a minimum charge for cash withdrawals, usually £3. moneysavingexpert.com/tra…ges

yes, nationwide is the only way to go. They were fast for me too, both debit and credit cards are free overseas

I have a Nationwide card I use when going abroad, Abbey I believe have a card that you can use abroad without surcharges, the rates they apply are decent too, applies to Nationwide Credit Card as well.

the nationwide debit card is what i use-it came first im sure before the credit one. i use the debit card-as long as you have funds it wont be a problem and you wont need a credit card.

Credit Card typically required for any Hotel and/or Car Hire however, also extra coverage on any £100+ purchase via the Consumer Credit Act for purchases in the UK (holiday/car hire paid for here etc)

well, the charge for cash withdrawals is still there, even with nationwide (credit card that is, they don't charge for debit card withdrawals abroad which is the way i usually get foreign currency)

use and abuse as much credit as you can, soon there will be another depression and the £ will be useless and all the debt will be written off as we embrace a new currency

Can you please provide instructions as to how to reach this fantasy planet of yours where you seriously believe a) The Pound is going anywhere soon b) If it was replaced by the Euro that the Credit Card Companies wouldn't just convert the credit over like they did with over a dozen European countries.

Oh and does this planet have little green men or grey men?

i used the nationwide debit card for £1000 hotel bill and carhire last week no problem-and in assorted shops..oh and the post office-all in Hungary.
