I know you know about these things, when should I be looking at changing the belt on my 54 C-Max, petrol, 1,8l

Had a look in the handbook and couldn't find anything, plus Google throws up a lot of nonsense

Ruined my chrysler, had to buy a new car.

same thing, cam belt is most likely just yankie talk.

I remember when the cam chain/belt went on my Corsa.... it was a couple of weeks out of warranty...
the bill came to just under 2K!

Fortunately - as is was only just out of warranty, they offered to pay 90% of the cost!!

if i remember correctly - it had done ~45K miles.

Lot's of Fords have timing chains, Maintenance free lol, However some recommend they get changed around 100k as they can become a little noisy.

I think the 1.8 petrol C-Max is a Duratec engine and are chain Merry Xmas

Mine's a Zetec if that makes a difference?

OP your valves are very likely to be bent, Very costly £££££

Mines a Galaxy Zetec with a Duratec engine.

A little google suggest yours will be a chain, However I'd check with Ford just to be 100%

Also just checked on TIS and confirms it's chain.

Chain driven so only need to change if it gets noisey/rattley.

OP - What speed were you doing when it failed? High speeds risk head damage also which would be even costlier.

How old is the car, mileage, does it have a dealer service history?

you best best is to get someone to assess it for you and doing some simple check's once the belt/parts of belt removed.

You may get lucky or you may not... .

On a postive, there are a lot of these engines around at breakers.

It's common for Zafira cambelts to snap, I believe the 1.6 version required a cambelt change every 40k which is relatively low mileage between cambelt changes.

As the others have asked hopefully someone will know for mine too. I have a Ford Focus Zetec Diesel 1.8 X reg, does mine need some belt that needs changing? I've done 115,000 miles. No-one at the garage has ever suggested it which I thought they would if they could make money from it!

It has a belt, You should defo have it changed, Recommended at 100k.

Have you owned it from new? Has it been changed before?

Ah nice one, wonder why no-one at the garage has said that. It's been in several times since hitting 100k, a good 2-3 mots, you'd think it'd come up on that right?

Owned it from 40,000 miles, doubt it was changed before that.

    Thanks for the replies.

Incompetent garage, If it's a Ford steelership then even more incompetent.

On another note, Also have waterpump replaced at same time.

Hmm... This is starting to sound expensive, the car's not worth much at all, gonna ditch it within a few years! Thanks for the advice.

I had my belt changed Oct 2010 , a chap at the garage did the job for £55 . I bought a cam belt kit at the Vauxhall dealers for £66 plus vat . You get the belt and all the bearings in the box . The retail price at the time was £92 plus VAT . I have a trade card ,so ,it saves a few bob .It'll be expensive if the belt snapped on the road . You may need a camshaft and valves ,should just be top end damage though.

Would a mechanic be able to look at a cars timing belt and say whether its worth changing or not? Or would it show no sign and then BAM engine seized?

to be honest, with some cars by the time you've stripped off the covers etc to have a look at the belt, then you might as well do the job. But I would never look at a timing belt & say it was fine, because sods law says the belt might snap in a few days/weeks/months & that would be a bit embarrassing !
Sometimes its not always the timing belt snapping that is the problem, the alternator/power steering belt snaps or frays & then gets in behind the timing belt cover & that gets picked up by the timing belt & then you have major problems with valves hitting the pistons ! & contrary to belief the engine doesn't have to revving very hard for damage to occur, the vehicle at idling speed can cause damage from a snapped timing belt.
