Tip for anyone with a recent estimated gas or electricity bill

Anyone receiving a recent electricity or gas bill will have noticed the substantial price rises. Many of these bills are estimated which isn't usually a big problem, but, in this instance, if the bill is under-estimated it could be losing you money. This is because when you catch up with the higher useage it will be charged at the new prices, rather than the old price that was in force when the power was used.

In my case, the useage was considerably under-estimated on my recent bill. I've rung them up and given them an accurate reading. If I had left the inaccuracy to carry forward it would have cost me over £30 more because of the price hikes.

    good point

Excellent post and extremely relevant and helpful. Repped and 5 gold stars !!!

Don't be fooled into thinking this is not being done on purpose either ! In my opinion power company are seriously overstepping the mark in quite a few areas nowadays.

Thanks merlin and take notice people, could save you a fair few quid !!

NIce point. Always try and keep my meter details upto date.

I use EDF energy and email my readings in which I get a discount for also can check my energy usage on a graph via their web site to see if the other half's watching too much telly ;-).

good point, but you must use a massive amount of electricity. I assume your usage has increased suddenly hence why the estimate was out, maybe used alot of electricity for heating over the winter?

I always let them know the actual readings when they've estimated it - common sense really!

I always let them know a figure much below what it is! That way the money sits in my bank earning more interest, as long as I remember it's there and don't spend it then I'm quids in!!!

I prefer to not be in debt to anybody or be surprised with a massive bill at some point. A few pennies interest on a current account isn't worth the hassle for me! We all have our ways of doing things

That's usually true, but not when the price rises are taken into account. You would lose out with this tactic. We don't use a lot of electricity - it's simply that the bill has been estimated for a long time and we have got behind.

Thankfully, I am with Atlantic Electric & gas which are ALWAYS the cheapest and they have not put their price up at all unlike their competition.

When they come to read the meter then all the units you had underestimated will be charged at the highest price so you are losing out big time. I always provide higher readings.

It's usually the best way to do it, like you say though now is the time to hike it up and pay it off to get it on the cheaper rate.

Do lower until price hikes then do higher. Then do lower again!
