    tooth abscess

Have a question for any one who's had one, I went to the dentist yesterday, he said yes you have an abscess, gave me a course of antibiotics....mouths swollen and hurts a lot.....should the dentist of drilled a hole to drain the abscess??

Not in my experience. Antibiotics will clear the infection then he treats the tooth / gum disease

Thanks, any tips on easing the pain?

By draining it there is a risk of the infection spreading whereas with antibiotics the pain will start to go within 24 hours and clear up.

Usually they'll get you back a week later for a root canal or tooth removal. You've the fun bit to go yet

dentists don't like doing anything when u have n abscess they would do it after the swelling has gone down ,just make sure u take all the antibiotics as if u don't it will take longer for the swelling to gone down

Lol thanks, I'm having the thing out, more pain next week *sigh

Also, for some reason paracetamol is far more effective than ibuprofen for teeth pain apparently

On the bright side, least it's (usually) quick

I've two two over the years and both were treated with antibiotics followed by drilling and pulling the root out.

Teething gel, or if you can find it, there is a specific* gel for tooth pain etc, that should work.

I miss Oil of Cloves, I had an exploded nerve (a bit like being hit on the face by a sledge hammer), and this stuff was so good that even the dentist hammering the tooth two hours later, I couldnt feel a thing; the dentist hardly even needed anaesthetic

    * Everyone should have a tube in their holiday medical kit.

Clove oil is fantastic. Just don't use too much or you can't feel yourself chewing your own cheek!

Thanks, think I've got some of that in the cupboard

No I've had a few and always had antibiotics first and treatment after. Hope you feel better soon

real sympathy bud... that's horrendous...especially when the antibiotics start the fight and the goo drips out the abscess but then instant relief after the pressure is released...good move getting it sorted and taking THE FULL COURSE of antibiotics..some who haven't bothered seeking treatment haven't made it! see this if you dare!

Salt water helps draw the goo out and corsodol too

Don't think I'll look at the link lol, I'm not sure where the goo is going to escape though, as I think the abscess is in the tooth

Actually Ibuprofen would be more effective than paracetamol in this case of an abscess as it will reduce the swelling in the gum. a dentist would usually prescribe Ibuprofen for an abscess.

@OP...I feel for you though, I had a troublesome totth a few years back that had a recurring abscess...pain was horrific and never ending until the antibiotics kicked in (usually a couple of days)

Through trial and error I found that Paracetamol was useless on my abscess, however i did discover that soluble aspirin did take the edge of the pain a little, so they that if you can. Finally I also found that a bottle of Red wine or Two was about the only thing that allowed me to get any sleep :-)

    Hope it clears up soon.

A tube of oragel extra from the chemist is good as it numbs around the tooth so that you can get some sleep or at least a bit of rest

Thanks all for the replies, much appreciated

I had an one a few months ago another reason u get antibiotics first is to try clear some of the infection first cause if don't try to clear some of that the anthestic might not work or be as effective therefore u would feel everything going on

Hi, I got caught with a severe toothache in Mexico and couldn't get to see a dentist before my flight home. One of my colleagues had some of this, anbesol.com/tooth with her and it worked amazing well. I soaked a small piece of cotton wool and kept it clamped to the side of the tooth, refreshing the liquid about every 30 mins kept me going on a 10 hr flight and then off to the dentist.
Whether the dentist drains an abscess depends on location and severity.
    Best of luck.
ps just be aware that antibiotic treatment in dentistry can take a week or so to take effect.
