Top Spec PC

For xmas, I've been given upto £1200 to spend on a new PC. (without a printer, I would like a top knotch spec for a Desktop with TFT which I could possibly use for my xbox 360 for a max of £900)

Must include canny graphics and sound card too, but also I need to (if poss), use it as a fax modem to send/receive faxes as its for work and play. Is this possible, and whats the best deal out there?

That much on a pc is overkill.
Your gonna get all this top of the range stuff and have nothing thats gonna make use of it all.

but thats where you guys come in...

I need to for work/play, but also for the 2 kids who will no doubt play games, and for the OH who will use it for his website business, hence why I need a good machine

I now my old one had 160gb harddrive, but my OH suggests a "tirribite" one? i dont have a clue. All I know is it needs to be fast, with lots of space and a canny TFT for my youngest to use as a 2nd screen for his XBOX! (hence the 900£ budget)

A friend of mine always used to swear by these as money was no object and your budget is rather nice so have a look alienware.co.uk/mai…spx

HTH

honestly. that is so much overkill. like goderic said that amount of money people buy alien ware which look cool, but worth the money?
i dont reckon so!

Look at pcspecialist.co.uk and cyberpowersystems.co.uk.. both sites are very good and for your budget they can build you a monster pc.. or a better option would be to chat to a techie friend and get them to build you one..

£900 for just the PC would have got you a top-notch one, but if you want top-notch peripherals as well within that budget you're going to have to compromise somewhere.

The following are what I'd consider top-spec components (without being the very high priced absolute fastest):

Processor: Q9550 £200
Memory: 4GB DDR2 800 £50
Graphics card: 4870/GTX260 £175
Hard Drive: 1x 1 Terabyte (tirribite) £90
Blu-ray writer: £150
Case: Antec P182 £100
Power Supply: £75
Sound card: Xonar DX £60
Speakers: £100
Keyboard: Cherry G80-3000LSCGB £50
Mouse: £30
Monitor: HP LP2475w 24" £400
Other small bits: £50 (wifi, bluetooth, quiet CPU cooler, modem etc.)

Total: £1530

And you can add another £100-200 on for delivery.

(suggested parts would be fairly high up my list of choices, but you could of course choose something different)

Obviously that's quite a way above your £900 budget so like I said you will have to make some compromises to get it down.

There are some obvious ones like the case, a cheaper £30 case doesn't look and feel as nice but it generally does the job just as well.

The blu-ray drive also could be replaced by a standard £20 DVD writer and you could buy one in a year or two when the prices come down.

If you've already got good speakers then you could take those off the list, with those off and the price reduction from the case and optical drive we're down to £1230.

The above bits won't be missed much, but now you have to decide whether to compromise on the mouse, keyboard and monitor that you spend all the time interacting with, or the internals that determine the speed of the computer, or both.

EDIT: All you need to send faxes is a 56k modem I believe, you can probably still get them fairly cheaply, or you could get an all-in-one with fax capability like some of HP's models.
