Right, download these : Grabit & Quickpar.

Set the server in Grabit to news.virginmedia.com

Go to NZBMatrix and grab some .nzb's. Rock and roll ;-)

All free btw. If you do decide to pay then go with Astraweb, theres a very good deal for them on here somewhere:thumbsup:

For torrents yes, but try usenet as well. It tends to be a lot faster but torrents are good for rarer things. I recommend utorrent 1.6.1 over the later versions

no idea what I'm meant to do with quickpar

so you dont seed back at all?

use isohunt for searching for torrents -

    netforbeginners.about.com/gi/…om/

just put your search terms in the box near the top, choose which result you want, click download torrent, then u torrent will kick in automatically. keep all your downloads in a seperate file, ie my downloads.makes em easier to find

oh yeh, if you're downloading large files, ie films, do it late at night or early morning otherwise virgin might choke your speeds

No, pure downloading ;-) Quickpar is only needed if the files you d/l are corrupted. When you add a nzb you can safely delete all the par files from the list (but it is a good idea to keep the basic par2 file), then if you need to do a repair you can just add the nzb again and get the par's, double click on one and it tells you how many blocks you need. So if you needed 8 blocks you just d/l a par with vol xx+08 or above, if you needed 9 then vol xx+8 & vol xx+01 etc. As long as they add up to the number of blocks needed it 'should' fix the file. Pretty clever ****, can even recreate a complete missing file :w00t:

Fully agree with what you say, but unless it's changed very recently remember NZBmatrix only allows files to be downloaded that were added in the last 20 days, unless you pay the £7 lifetime membership (well worth it though).

Or use a free search engine like: ]http//ww…php
There may be other free ones that are better, but not sure.

Virgin's retention seems a bit hit and miss anyway, so 20 days is probably excessive  Binsearch is another good free site. A bit messy but if you add nzb to every search you get readable results. People on BT can use news.btinternet.com, you only get 3 connections but its handled by Astraweb afaik so better service.

No free usenet on sky afaik. Why does that not surprise me?

    Shengis,

    any help appreciated.

never used newsgroups etc so giving it a try.

So I am now using grabit and quickpar (not sure what that is) and virgin server.

I use nzbmatrix for index searching.

Am i right in thinking if I subscribe to astraweb ($25 for 180gb), then I just change over the server in grabit?

Also, any free index search sites out there as I believe nzbmatrix will only allow me to connect to ones less than 7 days old without paying £7 (although it does have a great interface so may just pay out anyway)

    cheers

Does anyone have any idea about free usenet on BT? Been searching but cant find any info.

Quickpar will fiz rar files if they have errors when you try to extract them. Just load up quickpar, add the file that has errors, then select 'open' which allows you to browse to the par2 file that came with the download. This then checks the rar file allows you to repair if needed.

If you sign up to Astraweb then you can change the server to point to Astraweb, and I think the $25 for 180GB is good for non heavy downloaders, so could work out cheapest method.

Also don't forget Astraweb has SSL encryption, so more secure than downloading from Virgin.

A free search engine is: ]http//ww…php but I would certainly pay the one off £7 for NZBmatrix.

    Hope that helps.

Oh, and I found this a useful guide to newsgroups (also explains rar files and how the Par files work to fix them)

I don't know a great deal on how it works, but I think most data on newsgroups gets spread to all servers (might be wrong though!)
Also, I expect files are kept for shorter times on Virgin servers. Plus, with Astraweb you have ssl encryption to the servers, not with Virgin. I just wouldn't feel comfortable downloading something direct from a Virgin server!!

The great thing I find about newsgroups is being able to download old TV series that you won't find on Torrents. As long as the search comes up with something, even posted 300 days ago you will download the file at full speed. I'm sure you know how slow torrents can be if it's an old file with only 1 or 2 seeds. The reason I download TV programmes is that you find almost everything in HD, way better than downloading them from torrents, much much faster.

The servers are generally the same, only giganews usually has more retention. Just make sure you keep within the maximum retention of Astraweb, and you should be fine

180gb for $25 seems a bargain to me (about 5p per film ;-))

Another tip someone suggested to me, if you are paying for the 180GB allowence, then you could set your news reader to look at the Virgin Server first, and the Astraweb as secondary, then if it can't find the data the Virgin server it looks at the Astrweb server. This means if the data does come down from theVirgin server you are not using up your 180GB allowence....
But I still prefer to avoid the Virgin server all together.
