I heard this on the radio..... quite shocking and thought provoking.

Tragic,:-(.......... but they only needed to have knocked the car in to neutral.

Funnily, when I was listening, that was my thoughts also!

Though I expect they were braking and pulling the hand brake at the same time, I'm still shocked it continued to accelerate.

There was a bit on the BBC news website yesterday about what to do if your accelerator sticks. This crash was mentioned and they reckoned the driver panicked and didn't think to put it in neutral....

    news.bbc.co.uk/1/h…stm

It would have almost certainly have been an automatic in the USA

Just knocking it in to neutral would have removed the engine power from the transmission.

OK, it may have wrecked the engine, but still better than what happened.

Without sounding condescending I assumed it would be a woman who panicked, but it says it was a state trooper. You would have thought he could handle the situation, neutral or turn it off completely.

Saying that if you are doing 60-70 it doesn't take long to get to 120 these days.

How sad, I suppose Toyota may not have know about the accelerator issue.

There is a better report here
    signonsandiego.com/new…sh/

It's not known whether Saylor, a 19-year CHP officer whose job entails vehicle safety inspections, tried to shut off the engine or put the car in neutral – the two most common ways to slow down a vehicle with a stuck accelerator.

Car experts said it's not always that simple.

An electrical or mechanical failure could have made it impossible to shift into neutral, said Daniel Vomhof III, a vehicle accident reconstructionist with La Mesa-based Expert Witness Services.

    and
Another complication: A report by the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration found that some Lexus drivers with stuck accelerators tried to turn off the car with the engine control button but didn't know the button must be held for three seconds.

It was a loan car whilst his own car was being serviced so he may not have known this

    Carley;7766386

    Knew for 2 years apparently

Such a dangerous problem, They should be done for manslaughter...!!!

Regarding the situation the driver was in, In that scenario you don't always think to do the right thing..!!! Even if it's simple.

God knows what sort of lawsuit is coming there way now.

Reading the account it was a push button start / stop and as a loaned car he may have not known how to switch it
    off.

The service place that loaned him the car must be feeling pretty desperate too.

going into a gorge at the end of the freeway! yanking the wheel over would have been a better option. At least they would have stood a chance of survival.

i must say how useless the 911 operator was

The driver was hardly clear, It's also probably not everyday they come across the situation the driver was in.

    urmmm who said he was?

you don't have to be a technician to tell someone to switch off the engine or put the gears into neutral!

god help his next caller- imagine someone calling upafter they find themselves in a house thats in a blaze....

i doubt this operator would say "fck get the hell out or to smash his way out"
instead he would probably faff about

then why didnt the driver (road cop) try that lol

you knew the background before listening. Play the tape again and imagine being in the operators position. The cop was very unclear about what was happening.

BTW, you ever tried putting an automatic into neutral at 120mph and apparently lexus need the engine stop button pressed for 3 seconds.

He/she didn't need to be, just a basic understanding of common sense would have helped.;-)

Didn't need to " turn it off ", only had to select neutral.

I.ve had my accelerator pedal stuck under my carpet before. i depressed the clutch. Reached down and pulled the carpet back. Think this is why all new cars have clip on carpets?

So can you stick US autos into neutral at 120mph? Think its way too harsh to say Operator has blood on his hands! Dodgy mobile connection, vague responses and operator even said switch the engine off in the 40 seconds of the call

    Stupid Americans

Switch it off, put it in neutral

Nothing special about US Auto's, you can and should select neutral in any car under the circumstances, auto or manual.

    sounds fake

    I thought that too

    Horrible thing to happen, but...

Sounds like the guy was a bit daft driving at 120 using a mobile phone with his family in the car.

the operator failed to calm the caller and give firm assertive advice- surely thats why they are given the training?

i would be surprised if he is still in his job

Must have been his last resort surely? (pity he didn't have a wap enabled phone, could have asked on misc and saved all of their lives)

LOL...... Cars in the US pretty much have as standard hands free from the rear view mirror - particularly in a hire car.

So yes, if I was in that position and hadn't a clue what to do, I think sorting out the problem would be the thing on my mind.

I've driven quite a lot in the US, and haven't seen hands free in any of those cars.

Never mind the phone, I was referring more to the 120mph.
