It has now been confirmed that Toys R U are in administration, and unortunately over 3000 jobs are at risk. Sad times

Moorfields has been appointed to begin "an orderly wind-down" of the UK's biggest toy retailer.

Stores will remain open until further notice, but this will eventually result in 106 store closures

Damn, 2 stores i really don't want to close. Maplin was great for emergency components (well, if they were in stock)
They failed to keep up with retail trends .. Like being registered in a tax haven and paying 3% tax

Duck me, that didn’t take long for a chancer to stand up and shout me me me.

Toys R Us has gone into administration, putting 3,000 UK jobs at risk.

Moorfields has been appointed to begin "an orderly wind-down" of the UK's biggest toy retailer.

The corporate recovery specialist said that all stores would remain open until further notice.

Joint administrator Simon Thomas said: "Whilst this process is likely to affect many Toys R Us staff, whether some or all of the stores will close remains to be decided."

It's a real shame for the jobs but retail has changed since much. Toys r us is so badly managed and there's no real reason for anyone to shop there.

Maplin fell victim to the internet, simple as. More information, more stock and cheaper prices online. Some jobs will be created at Amazon to replace these but retail is going to be decimated over the next decade.
No surprise, toys r us stuck with its giant inefficient warehouse style shops whilst Smythes kept itself competitive and attractive even against the Internet, Smythes is essentially what toys r us should have become

Maplin seems to have a sales clerk sales model, every time I went there's always like 8 staff members on the floor which was terribly inefficient and they would always ask if you needed something. They're good for bits and bobs but awful for everything else

That will be the Amazon who paid £15m tax on a £20billion EU turnover and a mere £7m in the Uk as it claimed it made only £24m profit in 2016...Despite turning over £1.5billion . Oh wait a min ain't they based in Junckers Luxembourg?

Maplins was always good for bits of wire and connectors. Unfortunately a customer spending 36p on a piece of wire won't keep the business afloat. Everything else could be purchased elsewhere for cheaper.

He doesn't possess Luxembourg and if he did you'd need an apostrophe there.

If people felt strongly about Amazon's tax affairs, they wouldn't shop there.
Wouldn't be surprised if Claire's accessories is next, they are already on the brisk of collapse with crippling debt due in 2019, and most of their income comes from concessions in Toys R Us!

How much of that £7million was VAT, Employers National Insurance and rates?
I always get confused, does corporation tax come before, after or part of published tax bill?
Didn’t know about Prezzo - they are about to open up a new branch in Borehamwood next month and are recruiting...hmm
Sad for the staff but you never know we might actually be able to buy things at the price you can get them everywhere else now. Gonna be a pain in the arse with work as we regularly use maplin for emergency electrical spares (obscure fuses etc). Doubt there would be much discount in the case of maplins. I tried to haggle a deal once and the managers said they can’t as all expensive items are on a sale or return basis. Makes sense why they are so expensive as they probably get them at rrp and then have to make profit. On the other hand if I’m wrong then I’m guessing all the good stuff (ssd, ram, gpu, disco stuff etc) will sell out as soon as they discount it by £1 lol. Here’s hoping for a buyout by radio shack as it’s a store we need in the uk.

If anyone wonders why...

"Even in clearance now, trying to turn things around, they've been undercut by discounters and big brands like WH Smiths and The Entertainer."

'they've been undercut by discounters and big brands like WH Smiths'.

such a sad day
It is very sad nothing left soon
In the Warrington store now - virtually nothing discounted!
It was inevitable.

That's me ..think if you read Bob Comfort (former head of Amazon tax) comments about Junckers involvement in "sorting" amazons problems and behaving like a "business partner" to facilitate this scam it may as well be his Luxembourg ., keep taking the pedantic pills.

Maplin are trying to blame brexit, I have not shipped at mamplin for several years simply because I find them over priced compared to everywhere else unless the item is on sale. uk.businessinsider.com/toy…8-2

I wonder what will happen to all the game stores that have recently moved into the maplin shops.

This has been on the cards for years, and is just the direction high street retail is heading in.

I always found Maplins well over priced compared to online prices.

To be fair to Amazon, they actually have comparatively lower profits by (partially) compensating their workers. Apple on the other hand...

RadioShack has been in the UK, early 2000s to mid 2000s if I remember correctly. They've been long gone since.

Maplin was expensive long before Brexit, I remember buying a monitor cable back in 2012 and it was like £25, absolute rip off

Maplin is only good for random things you want now like connectors or wiring components, else its over priced and/or poor quality off brand Chinese tat

Well hopefully they make a comeback now maplins has gone. Either way we need a components retailer as screwfix etc doesn’t cut it. Hopefully schools see sense and buy all their components stock as tbh they had some good educational stuff in there. I will admit though I regularly went in for a look then bought online cheaper purely due to price.
I am quite surprised by Prezzo. The other two were obvious contenders.
