Cookies are not usually a problem. They store info on your computer so websites know you're logged in, etc.

When you visit a web site (almost all web sites) they download a cookie to your computer (it is just a small text file).

Web sites use cookies for all sorts of reasons, but one of them is to store information you may have typed in when you registered or logged on. So if your name is Fred and your registered to the site, next time you go back to the site it may say "Welcome back Fred". It got this information from the cookie.

Some sites like to keep a track of what pages you visited, what products you looked at and so on. So if you visited the Amazon site to look for say a Digital camera, next time you go back to the site it may suggest some digital cameras for you, or maybe a book about how to use a digital camera.

Holding this sort of information about web sites you visited and pages you looked at is called tracking and some companies make a business of it.

The trouble is, you may delete these tracking cookies, but the miniute you go back to a site they re-appear again.

They are not dangerous, but some people do not like their web habits being tracked.

You can choose to have ALL your cookies deleted every time you exit your browser, but it means having to log on to every web site when you go back to it. which can be a pain.

I would not get too paranoid about tracking cookies, just delete them every so often. It is very difficult to stop yourself ever getting a tracking cookie.

On the virus scan it says risk level medium.

I agree with what has been said above about risk but I tend to dump all cookies once a week and do a cleanup and defrag at the same time. That should keep your PC from slowing down.

Hope this helps

I run a small program called WinPatrol (free). I think this is one of THE great little programs.

Get it from here

winpatrol.com/

WinPatrol has LOADS of great features, such as warning you when ANY program is being installed maybe without your knowledge (so a virus, malware or whatever) and you have the chance to say no.

It also warns you if someone tries to change your browser homepage.

But one nice feature is the ability for it to DELETE cookies that contain certain words or keystrings. One of the most famous tracking cookies is called "hitbox". If you go into WinPatrol, find the cookie page, and enter "hitbox" any cookies that are created with the word "hitbox" in them will be deleted.

You can gradually add the name of all the tracking cookies reported by AVG, till eventualy ALL tracking cookies will be deleted the moment they are created.

Revenge !!!

If you are concerned read the first few paragraphs from this site, it will put your mind at rest

One of the things it says is:

Cookies are also subject to a number of misconceptions, mostly based on the erroneous notion that they are computer programs. In fact, cookies are simple pieces of data unable to perform any operation by themselves. In particular, they are neither spyware nor viruses, despite the detection of cookies from certain sites by many anti-spyware products.
