train tickets without specifying an outgoing date...is it possible?

Found 10th Aug 2009
Just wondering if it's possible to buy train tickets in advance without specifying the outgoing date?

I know you can get an open return, but myself, husband and mom need to travel to london (kings cross) to see my brothers first child. We want to go the day his child is born (due sept), for two nights but obviously can't pre-book tickets since we don't know what day the baby will pop out! And i've noticed ticket prices for 3 adults are v. High if only booking 1 day in advance.

Also, we can't travel by coach as my mom has dodgy knees so needs the space.

yeah you can buy tickets without a specific date if its with national express as i got a ticket to newcastle and was open to use on any date from 6th june to 25th july so they give you plenty of time to use it

Great

Where can this be done on the site as whenever I've gotten tickets you always have to specify a travel out date?

think you need to ask for a super-off peak ticket which are unrestricted as to date (but limited to certain "off-peak" trains). I tend to wander down to local station and they issue them for me on the spot - don't have to be purchased miles in advance either - may be wrong but I BELIEVE it is up to 6pm day before travel
