Travelling to Barcelona alone with Toddler

I'm off to Spain next week with my 4 year old Daughter, She wasn't originally meant to go..This was an anniversary holiday for my partner and myself but his passport hasnt arrived in time so I'm taking daughter instead.

I booked with easyjet (Thievyjet) and had to pay £200 to change my partners name on the booking to my Daughters name.

I've not travelled abroad with my Daughter alone before and I am bit anxious about the trip, The airport is 60 miles from the resort so I'm booking a car to hire to collect when we land over there....I'm nervous about driving too,

Anyone have any advice, tips or warnings to help steady my nerves lol
    thanks

No tips but well done for going for it on your own

    You will be fine!!!
I travelled with my son about that age. Just be sensible (like you would in this country - dont let the fact you are in a different country phase you!)
Have you booked a car seat?
There are enough officials around if you need help
Above all - have a lovely time

no tips really, just have a great time, and i bet you gonna be mad if his passprt turns up on the morning of departure

Still time to get your passport sorted though.

i would take a pram (small stroller )with you or a brace so that when you need both hands for passports , check -in she does not wonder off. Good luck you will fine

    Thanks for all your replies,

I have booked a child seat for the car, She's a pretty good child and doesn't tend to wonder off and she hasn't used a pram for over a year now,

Partner's passport won't be here in time as we have been on the phone to Passport office and they couldn't find his previous passport details from 1977 when it was issued, every file before 1980 is still in paper form and he has to now submit a new first time passport application.....it's been a real fight with the passport office as we applied for his replacement passport over 2 mponths ago and everytime we phoned them for an update we were told theres a back log....we can't even get compensation as they say you should never book a flight/holiday without having a valid UK passport.

we can't even go to peterborough like the old days.....its all changed now.

Starting to feel less nervous about the holiday now and appreciate your replies

Take a lightweight carseat-easyjet should allow it free and you can be sure it will be safe. Take lots of things to keep her ocupied but reveal little by little. Include a personal cd or cassette/mp3 and you will be able to use in the car too. According to her levelof understanding design a 'map' which lists your journey and maybe you can explain she will get a sticker at each point marked if she has been good and quiet etc? (Stickers work with my son!!) Fave teddy has to go too!. If she is small enough take a buggy or as someone else said a wrist strap or even an alarm (cheap to buy)
She will be just fine ( and you will too, promise!) I used to travel with 4 kids alone in the car, plane, whatever.
Stay calm and positive and she will feel it too. I hope you have a really good trip (cant believe that easyjet could charge £200 for a name change??)
    Linda

Shame about the passport business, the other way if there is time is to go to the passport office direct and queue up and get one the same day, its a real pain but worth checking out if possible.

Have a great time either way, Barcelona is great.

Barcelona is absolutely brilliant, you are going to love it ... I would go again tomorrow if I could !!
Its about 21C at the moment (think that's about 70F - Lovely .. have a great time ..

Why on earth did easyjet charge £200. Their website states:-

Change the passenger name or flight: yes. The cost is £17.50 per flight plus any increase in fare since the original booking.

I dont think the OP is actually staying in Barcelona as Barcelona airport is only about 10 miles from Central Barcelona City.

my only advice and not meaning to scare you but watch for pickpockets.

Take something to store money in safely

we tried to get a passport issued by queueing up but the rules have changed now, we tried every single angle to get his passport this week and its a no go

Easyjet's small print states that if you change a passenger's name they will then charge you the current value of the seat/holiday.....Over on MSE there's quite a few complaints about this!...Hence Thievyjet name lol.

Although we are flying to Barcelona we are staying near salou, about 60 miles from Barcelona....depending how I get on with the driving whilst there I would love to go into the City.

I plan to take a rucksack for Daughter's entertainment things, mini DVD player, books, treats and etc...but she loves flying so I guess she'll be entranced by the experience on the plane.

I am concerned about pickpockets, I got mugged in Paris 2 years ago..which I think maybe influencing my anxious thoughts about this trip....

I really appreciate all your replies...its helping

when we went to madrid i got a money belt which keeps all pocessions below your trousers and only kept a few euros in my pocket which meant if i was targeted they wouldnt get much

Drive to the nearest train station and park up as driving in barcelona centre is horrific.

Not quite correct - they charge the difference between when you booked and price when changing details plus £17.50

    its still daylight robbery though!

I'm pretty sure my partner went to Salou with her son 2 years ago. She's not about at the moment but will be around later on for a while.
I'll ask her and if so I'm sure she will be only too pleased to answer any questions you have.

In fact the boy will be home from school in the next half hour, I'll see if he remembers the name of the resort.
They had a great time by the way, really enjoyed it and went into Barcelona and down to Port Adventura albeit by coach.

I'll find out what I can for you

    Hi Sindy
It wasn't Salou after all. He couldn't remember the actual name but Salou is south of Barcelona and they were North.

I'm sure the O/H will not mind answering any general questions you have so feel free to PM me if you wish and I'll get them answered, or of course put them on here.

Like I said they thoroughly enjoyed themselves and just followed the normal rules about security and safety.

    Hi

My son and his dad are off to Salou on the 4th but they are flying into Reus which is about 10 mins from the resort of Salou. Barcelona is a bit of a mare to drive in as we found out last October when we drove from Salou to Girona. Didn't even mean to go into the Centre but took a wrong turning and then got stuck in a one way system. There are tolls on the roads so if you do decide to drive try and take some euros in change and don't forget to take a ticket as you enter the motorway as if you forget they charge you full price when you come off! Have you thought about booking a return coach transfer? You can do this in the uk with companies such as resort hoppa (don't forget quidco). If you're staying in Salou you don't really need a car in that area as everythings quite compact and the bus service is excellent. Or you can reach Salou from Barcelona by train in about an hour. Definately go to Port - aventura. We took our 1 year old last year and there was loads for her to so your 4 year old will love it. Also an indoor water park which was fun - unfortunately the outdoor one isn't open yet. If you book in the uk it works out cheaper - I used Attraction Tickets Direct. If you need any other info i'm happy to help.

A wise choice, gets rid of an extra worry. The O/H and son used public transport and no worries. It's also possible the hotel or tour company will do excursions etc.
Don't forget the trip to Port Aventura The little 'un will love it !

You'll have a great time - I went with my 2 sons when they were little - Spanish people love kids and are really helpful. Enjoy!

glad to help - have a great time

Ok I've booked with resort hoppa shuttle transfer service...does anyone know if I need to take a child seat for the bus for my nearly 4 year old?

i've been to salou the last 2 years, there is a fab ice cream parlour on the front, i can't remember the name, but they do the best ice cream sundays in the world.

    have a fab time
